Meghan Markle Called a ‘Copycat’ Again After Fans Notice This Kate Middleton Detail
The royal rift between the Waleses and the Sussexes only seems to be worsening as Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle were once again pitted against each other.
There was a time when royal feuds involved going to war or announcing a coup. But times have certainly changed, as presently, for better or worse, royal fan wars usually involve heated debates over who copied whom. And now, estranged sisters-in-law Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle once again found themselves in a fashion clash as both factions took to social media to argue who wore the cape dress first.
On Saturday, Markle and Prince Harry attended David Foster’s 40th Anniversary Gala in Canada. For the special occasion, the Duchess of Sussex opted for a black off-shoulder cape dress that reminded many royal fans of the Princess of Wales’ green cape dress during her Wimbledon outing last month. Although Middleton’s Emilia Wickstead number was not off-shoulder, the cape element was eerily similar in both outfits. And thus began a new digital warfare.
Markle and Middleton fans took to X to compare their looks and also pulled out older outfits the women had previously styled to support their point. Interestingly, both women have worn different variations of cape dresses before. "Copycat strikes again," one X user said, referencing Markle, while another came to her defense, writing, "Stop gaslighting the public. Kate is copying Meghan-Meghan is being herself." One X user commented "The same pattern on the sleeve as the princess of wales", while another countered, "Meghan leads, Kate follows, was ever so". One user on X stated, "The top of the dress looking a lot like Catherine 's Wimbledon dress" and another differed, "Meghan Channeling Meghan! So damn stunning!"
In recent times, the Waleses and the Sussexes have often been accused of copying each other. Last month, Markle received flak for wearing a blue gemstone ring in a promotional video for her lifestyle brand, As Ever, because it uncannily resembled Middleton’s iconic sapphire and diamond engagement ring, which previously belonged to Princess Diana. The Prince and Princess of Wales were also not immune to the comparisons. They drew criticism for posting a “summer recap” four days after the Duchess shared a photo dump from her European summer family vacation.
Shortly after the summer carousel debate, the rear-view shot argument came. Middleton and Prince William attended the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with their kids, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, last week. After the appearance, the couple posted a picture of the family walking on the premises. The only catch: the photo was taken from behind, an angle commonly attributed to Markle. The Duchess usually posts rear-view shots of her kids, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, possibly in an effort to hide their faces.
Some years ago, these parallels would probably have been taken in a much more positive light. But since the 2020 rupture of the Fab Four, even the smallest similarities have become grounds for arguments.
