Prince William and Kate Make Rare Exception to Royal Family's Halloween Rule

While the royal family is not known for celebrating Halloween, this year the Prince and Princess of Wales seem to have made an exception. Although they did not step out dressed in costumes, they made it clear that their kids are allowed to celebrate every holiday, including Halloween. For the uninitiated, the Royal Family has followed a rather unusual rule when it comes to celebrating the occasion in public. The tradition reportedly dates back to the reign of Queen Victoria, who ruled from 1837 to 1901.

To mark Halloween, Princess Kate and Prince William, in an unexpected move, took to their social media handle to post a cute picture of Prince Louis crouching over a large orange pumpkin, seemingly fascinated by the autumn decoration. Dressed in a navy blue jacket and little red boots, Louis looked completely engrossed in his pumpkin adventure. They captioned the post as, "Happy Halloween! 🎃. Prince Louis, aged 1, photographed by The Princess of Wales." This is the very first time the Wales kids have seemingly been seen publicly celebrating the festival. Even if it's an old picture.

Royal family fans were delighted to see the post and couldn't get enough of baby Louis's cuteness. It is no secret that the royals don't celebrate the festivities, as they are expected to uphold "total class and sophistication." This meant maintaining "complete self-respect and good behaviour when in front of the general public," as shared by royal expert Christina Reeves. However, this does not mean that members of the Royal Family have never enjoyed dressing up.
In 1941, the then-Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret took part in a performance of Cinderella at Windsor Castle. Both sisters wore a costume for the special performance, although Elizabeth reportedly stopped dressing up after becoming queen in 1952. Other than that, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have spoken more openly about their love for Halloween celebrations.

The Duchess once revealed that she and Harry had enjoyed a night out in Halloween costumes with Princess Eugenie and her now-husband Jack Brooksbank in Toronto in 2016, before their relationship became public. During her appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, she shared, "He [Harry] came to see me in Toronto, and our friends and his cousin Eugenie and now her husband Jack came as well." She added that they had dressed up for a post-apocalyptic-themed party, describing their costumes as "very bizarre."
