The Sussexes have only just returned to the U.K., and everyone seems to already have several different questions and theories surrounding them. The biggest of them all: Is there any hope of reconciliation between Prince Harry and his older brother, Prince William?

The two brothers have been estranged since the Duke of Sussex and his wife, Meghan Markle, stepped back from their royal duties back in 2020 before moving across the pond to California. Things only escalated after Harry’s memoir, Spare, came out in 2023. The revelations made in the book did not paint a pretty picture about the British royal family, especially of the future heir. But now that Harry and Markle, along with their two children, are back in Britain, will the two of them take a step forward in mending what was broken? Or will things continue to fester?

Royal author Andrew Morton, speaking to The Express, said how William and Harry’s relationship has changed over the last few years. “I've always argued that William saw, and so did Diana; they saw Harry as his wingman, and now he's turned into a hitman. And that's something which struck me very forcibly.”

He also mentioned Spare and how that made things worse, adding, “But at the same time, Harry's memoir and his real-life experience were very much a whinge. [He moaned] about the fact that he got the smaller room at Balmoral, he didn't get as much money, and he wasn't treated in the same way.”

Morton then went on to say that the job description was ‘in the title,’ and thus, there was no point complaining about it. “Well, of course, he wasn't treated in the same way; he was the spare. The clue's in the title. William is the one who's destined to be King, but it's a very lonely position.” The younger brother was always meant to be a supporting hand for the elder, but things took an ugly turn. Now, their once-close bond has fractured so deeply that they refuse to even be in the same room, especially William.

He even mentioned how the late Queen and Princess Diana held a similar vision for the brothers’ roles, explaining, “The thinking was always from the Queen to Diana to the rest of the senior royals that Harry would support William. As temperamental as he was, people did feel that he would never betray the Royal Family, which sadly he did.”

Now that the Sussexes are back in Harry’s homeland, royal enthusiasts hope Diana’s two sons will try to mend the rift that has grown between them in recent years. Reports suggest the primary reason for the move was Harry's desire to spend more time with his father, who continues to undergo treatment for cancer. The question now is whether, alongside his visits with Charles, he will also get to spend time with the Wales family, and particularly his brother.
