Royal Family Marks Princess Anne’s 76th Birthday by Highlighting Her Accidental Sports Legacy

The royal family marked Princess Anne's birthday on Saturday with a tribute honoring a major sports connection that began entirely by accident.

Princess Anne rang in her 76th birthday on Saturday, August 15th, and the royal family shared a fitting tribute to mark the occasion. The Princess Royal is a former Olympian, having competed in equestrian events at the 1976 Games. Even today, she continues to be heavily involved in sports and serves as the Honorary President of the British Olympic Association. For her special day, King Charles and Queen Camilla chose to celebrate another of her notable sporting connections—one that was forged purely by accident.

On Saturday, the royal family took to Instagram stories to wish the Princess Royal on her birthday. “Wishing a Happy Birthday to The Princess Royal!” read the caption, complete with a birthday cake emoji. The official handle posted a picture of her shaking hands with Scottish rugby captain Sione Tuipulotu after the Guinness Six Nations match between Scotland and France at Scottish Gas Murrayfield in March. Anne looked elated as she stood next to the trophy and offered Tuipulotu a congratulatory pat on his shoulder. She has been a proud patron of Scottish Rugby for almost 40 years and regularly attends the team’s home and away games.

Interestingly, her connection to the organization began purely by chance—a revelation she made on her son-in-law Mike Tindall's podcast, The Good, The Bad & The Rugby, in 2023. “It was an accident,” she recalled. “They asked me to go and open the East Stand when it was built. I had about two weeks' notice because they'd been let down. As it happened, the horse was lame, so I wasn't competing at the weekend. And about a month later, they wrote and asked me if I'd like to become patron. I don't know whether they're happy with that!” Watch the video here!

When asked by Tindall if she enjoyed rugby, Anne humorously replied that she could “cope” with it. Reflecting on how the sport has evolved over the years, she shared her thoughts on whether she liked it then or as it is now: “In some respects, I think it's changed for the worse, but there are some bits of it where the changes to the rules have been a good idea. It's changed partly because you've gone from amateur to professional, and that changes the attitude. But I would argue that the fitness levels are different—much less focused on stamina than they used to be—and that there are too many replacements, which actually makes the likelihood of injuries that much higher.”

Rugby runs deep on the Princess' side of the family: her son, Peter Phillips, also played the sport growing up. Meanwhile, her daughter, Zara Tindall, followed in her parents’ footsteps with a distinguished equestrian career—even earning a silver medal in the team event at the London 2012 Olympics, which was presented to her by the Princess Royal herself.

What started as a last-minute favor nearly four decades ago has blossomed into one of Princess Anne’s most enduring royal roles. Today, she remains a familiar, cheering presence in the stands at Murrayfield—proving that a broken schedule and a lame horse can sometimes lead to the perfect royal match.

Her relentless work ethic remains on full display. Just weeks before her 76th birthday, the Princess Royal embarked on a high-profile official tour of South Korea and Thailand, once again proving why she is widely regarded as one of the hardest-working members of the royal family.
