Prince Harry and Meghan Markle appeared in good spirits as they arrived for an event, but things soon took an awkward turn, especially for Markle.
A few days ago, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry attended an event together for the first time since returning from the UK: the 40th-anniversary gala for the David Foster Foundation in Victoria, Canada. While fans were delighted to see the couple back on the red carpet, especially so soon after their trip to Europe, the couple made headlines for all the wrong reasons. Though they arrived in high spirits, things soon took an awkward turn, especially for Markle.
Dressed to impress for the night, Markle looked chic in a black one-shoulder gown by Greta Constantine. Right by her side was Harry, perfectly complementing his wife in a matching tuxedo. But while the couple was happily posed for the photographers, the entry of Hollywood legend David Foster quickly shifted the energy. As the record producer walked towards the couple, Markle appeared to pull her hand away from Harry's chest and extend it towards Foster, seemingly to greet him. However, the legend appeared far from interested.
Foster walked straight past without acknowledging the Duchess, leaving her hand awkwardly outstretched. Foster's wife and American Idol star Katharine McPhee then stepped in and placed an arm around Markle as the two couples posed together for photographs. Markle quickly brushed off the awkward encounter, and after the brief exchange, the four appeared to smile for the cameras. Watch the video here.
The footage has since sparked plenty of discussion online, with some social media users claiming Foster had publicly snubbed Markle, while others defended the Duchess. Some viewers suggested Markle may have simply extended her hand to guide Foster and McPhee into position for photographs, rather than attempting to shake Foster's hand.
"Stop it. She wasn't trying to shake his hand. She was signalling the way for him to move next to them. Have you thought about how this is affecting a woman to have all you bots picking holes in her every move? Shame on all of you," opined a netizen, while another commented, "Why does she always look like she is directing traffic? Who made her the red carpet traffic police?" A third user wrote, "Acting like she’s in charge it’s literally for him and they act like they are the stars of the show."
Harry and Markle are said to have known Foster and McPhee for years, with McPhee previously having spoken about the close relationship between Harry and Foster, even describing the two having a "father and son" relationship. Not letting the encounter rain on her parade, Markle later posted a selfie with Harry on Instagram following the event. She even uploaded a video showing the couple walking past a group of bagpipers, though there was no mention of the event itself, as she captioned the post only with emojis.
