Why We 'Love to Hate' Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, According to a Royal Expert
Prince Harry and Meghan face heavy criticism but a part of it may be unwarranted.
Over the past several years, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have become divisive figures. For some reason, supporting them automatically equates to standing against the royal family, and of course, vice versa. While constantly targeting the monarchy could be the root of it all, the criticism leveled against them also has its own shades of hypocrisy.
Senior political commentator Annabel Denham recently pointed out the hypocrisy in the trolling of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, especially regarding their financial independence. Speaking for The Telegraph, she said, “Harry and Meghan were told to go and make their own money. So that's exactly what they did.” She mentioned that one doesn’t have to like what they produce, clarifying that much of it is “dazzlingly uncreative”, adding, “But it is rather strange to demand financial independence from them, then attack them when they try to achieve it.”
Denham highlighted that Harry and Markle weren’t “beyond criticism,” but the hatred against them has begun to feel a bit too much. She also urged royal fans to admit how much they liked hating on them. “The hatred directed against this pair has started to feel a little excessive. At the very least, shouldn't we admit how much we love to hate the dastardly duo? How nothing unifies society quite like a panto villain?” Watch the video here!
The commentator mentioned that behind the spicy news stories and flashy headlines about the Sussexes was a family, albeit a “very rich, very dysfunctional, extremely public family”. She wondered if it was time to cut them some “slack”. While the pair have consistently talked against the Firm, Denham believed the royal family could “survive” Harry and Markle.
Last month, the Sussexes returned to the UK for an extended period after leaving the country six years ago. There had been immense speculation as to what their stay in the UK would entail. However, King Charles recently clarified that the couple are not working royals and will live in the country in a private capacity. He also stated that their security, which has long been a point of contention for Harry, is up to the relevant police authorities.
Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet will likely join their new UK schools this month as the family adjusts to their new surroundings. Harry is also expected to undertake a series of charity events this month.
