'The Gentlemen' Star Ray Winstone Reacts to Meghan Markle Joining the Show — and It's Not Pretty
The push and pull surrounding Meghan Markle's role in The Gentlemen season 3 continues as another cast member gives their take.
Soon after it was announced that Meghan Markle was returning to the UK for an extended stay, there was speculation about her reviving her acting career. There were reports that the former Suits star was in talks to play a part in the popular Netflix series The Gentlemen’s season 3. However, when asked about it, leading stars Theo James and Kaya Scodelario had vague answers. And now another cast member, Ray Winstone, has opened up about the Duchess of Sussex joining the show.
Winstone, who plays Bobby Glass in The Gentlemen, recently appeared on The Romesh Ranganathan Show, where he was questioned about Markle. The veteran actor had a blunt response: “Who?” before saying, “Oh, shut up.” He further clarified via The Mirror, “I've never met her.” Ranganathan mentioned there were rumors that the Duchess could possibly be a part of season 3. “What, in The Gentlemen? Oh, shut up. I don't think so.” Winstone stated.
The Gentlemen season 2 was recently released on Netflix, and the Guy Ritchie directorial has already announced a third season with James, Scodelario, and Winstone returning. Markle was said to be in talks for a role, but former Vanity Fair editor-in-chief, Tina Brown, claimed the offer was pulled after “backlash in the UK”.
Earlier this month, James mentioned, “Well, I think that is just a rumour; I don’t even know the practicalities of how one would make that happen.” However, the Divergent star didn’t completely quash the rumors, as he said later in an interview, “But in terms of the minutiae, I mean, it’s still very much up in the air.”
Scodelario recently gave her take on the matter, saying, “I, unfortunately, have no decision-making abilities. I wish I did,” she added. However, she did mention that The Gentlemen had a legacy of incredible guest stars. “We have wonderful guest actors in season 2, but yeah, the more the merrier. Everyone come have a go. You guys, come have a go.” There is certainly a lot of push and pull about Markle returning to her acting career through a part in the Golden Globe-nominated show, but fans must be hopeful about the prospect.
In the meantime, Markle has made a cameo in the upcoming film Close Personal Friends. The film already has a stacked cast with Brie Larson, Lilly Collins, Jack Quaid, and Henry Golding. The Duchess is reportedly playing a version of herself.
