Recent allegations surrounding Thomas Markle, and Meghan Markle’s official statement addressing them, have unwittingly exposed significant gaps in how the Metropolitan Police handled a 2019 letter detailing Thomas’ alleged illicit activities. The situation has grown more absurd after a recent report revealed a severe lapse in the force’s management.

On Monday, The Times reported that the Met Police was unable to locate the original letter, which had been sent to its Fixated Threat Assessment Centre (FTAC), a specialist unit that assesses potential threats to the royal family and other public figures. Markle reportedly kept a copy of the letter and shared it with the police at their request. The new revelation has further shed light on the troubling handling of the matter.
However, this is only the latest oversight in a series suggesting the Met Police failed to handle the allegations properly. The letter was originally passed to the Sussexes in 2019, with the Duchess noting she was assured at the time that the accusations would be investigated. They weren’t. Likely because the matter fell outside British jurisdiction. But the letter was not shared with relevant international law enforcement agencies either.

Prompt action seven years ago could have prevented further harm to children, a concern the Met Police will likely face if the matter is referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). However, the Met Police will not be launching a probe in the latest scandal.
Since the disturbing material was reportedly discovered in Thomas’s former home in the Philippines, local authorities are currently investigating the allegations. The FBI is also reportedly providing support and investigating "potential US federal law violations." Thomas had returned to the US earlier this year.

He has denied all accusations, calling them “sick lies,” while his daughter, Samantha, has publicly voiced her support for him. Markle’s half-brother, who initially discovered the troubling material and went to the police last week, has offered an apology to his half-sister. Meanwhile, the Duchess has remained estranged from her father throughout these years, except for reaching out to him in December 2025 following his leg amputation.
