Princess Diana's LOL Moment: Late Royal Awkwardly 'Burst Out Laughing' When King Charles Popped the Question on Bended Knee
The wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer in the warm July sun of 1981 was, for many historians, the grandest marriage of an heir to the throne since the Middle Ages.
But amid the quintessential '80s, 25-foot gown train, Diana's first appearance in the Glass Coach, and the grand procession, the ultimately doomed union all began with a... giggle fit.
The future king proposed to his then-future queen on February 6, 1981, after only roughly eight months of dating between the pair. The engagement was formally announced to the world on February 24 with a July 29 wedding date set for St Paul's Cathedral, which some saw as an odd choice for a royal wedding, with the venue having been selected due to its "massive size" to fit thousands of world guests.
According to various sources, including biographers and Diana herself, the proposal was somewhat awkward and unromantic. The Prince of Wales popped the question in the nursery at Windsor Castle. The moment was not as grand or meticulously planned as one might expect for a royal engagement.
"She burst out laughing," royal biographer Ingrid Seward revealed. "I think that was probably her nerves. She didn't think it was the most romantic of proposals, but she had the proposal."
Author Christopher Wilson shared that Diana "was completely bowled over by this — didn't see it coming."
Diana's reaction to the proposal was a mix of shock with the nervous laughter. She later admitted that she found the situation overwhelming and surreal, given the gravity of the decision she was being asked to make. Diana's laughter was likely a response to the unexpected and somewhat anticlimactic nature of the proposal, contrasting sharply with the fairy tale narrative that surrounded their engagement and subsequent wedding.
This anecdote highlights the human side of Diana and Charles, showing that even royal proposals can be filled with nerves and awkwardness. It also underscores the complexities of their relationship from the very beginning, setting the stage for the challenges they would face in their marriage.
Some of the late princess' recently shared lost love letters also shed light on the "happier" moments between the two mismatched royals.
The princess was reported to have said that she wanted the world to know about the love letters then-Prince Charles used to send her in the earliest years of their union, which ended in divorce in 1996.
"Diana told me very shortly before she died that she wished people could see the love letters that she had from Charles," Seward added. "She really wanted people to know that she loved Charles, and he loved her. And I always remembered that. And she wanted the boys [Prince William and Prince Harry] to know that," she continued. "There was a period of great love between them."
