Prince Harry recently voiced his desire to reconcile with the royal family, particularly his father, King Charles. He expressed concern over Charles's health, admitting he doesn’t know how long his father has to live. The admission came during his BBC interview after having lost his legal fight for UK security last week. Harry said he still hopes to make peace with his family, even if they may never completely forgive him for what has happened since he stepped down in 2020.
As reported by the Daily Mail, Harry said, “There have been so many disagreements between me and some of my family. Of course, they will never forgive me for lots of things, but...there's no point in continuing to fight anymore.” He stressed, “Life is precious. I don't know how much longer my father has, he won't speak to me because of this security stuff. It would be nice to reconcile.” Harry has visited his father only once since news of his cancer diagnosis broke. He flew to the UK in February 2024, but Charles allegedly only spent about half an hour with his son, as per Newsweek.
During the sit-down interview, Harry also pointed out that he needs a royal invite to safely visit the U.K., since that’s when he gets proper security. He said, "Everybody knew that they were putting us at risk in 2020.” He questioned, "Whether you're the government, the royal household, whether you're my dad, my family — despite all of our differences — do you not want to just ensure our safety?" On Friday, the Court of Appeal rejected Harry’s lawsuit for the restoration of his state-funded security. Harry was challenging a 2020 decision that put a stop to him and his family getting full-time security, which other senior royals still get.
As reported by CBS News, Harry said, "This is, at the heart of it, a family dispute. And it makes me really, really sad that we're sitting here today, five years later, where a decision that was made, most likely — in fact, I know — to keep us under their roof."
Harry’s bombshell interview has many writing him off. Alisa Anderson, a former press secretary, deemed Harry's remarks about the King’s health 'unhelpful', especially given Charles is still undergoing treatment. She argued that his comments would only lead to more worry and speculation about the King’s health amongst the public. She opined that if Harry truly wanted to fix things with his family, he should’ve done it in private. Similarly, royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams also dubbed the interview 'confusing'. Previously, an insider also shared that Charles wanted to make peace with Harry, but it depended on how Harry reacted to losing his court case.
