The Royal Family spent years trying to understand Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s decision to step away from their royal duties and relocate to the U.S. Now that the couple has returned to British soil with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, the Palace is left even more confused. Instead of providing comfort and clarity, their unexpected move has sparked an entirely new mystery to solve. Palace insiders are left questioning their motives and wondering why now? A palace source has now expanded on the ongoing confusion in an interview with PEOPLE.

Expressing their thoughts, the insider exclaimed, “The royal family still don’t know what their motives are!” Even though the Sussexes had reportedly informed King Charles about their ‘grand homecoming’ days before actually disclosing the news to the media, the Duke and Duchess’ relationship with him remains confusing. This was made crystal clear when the Palace, under the King's guidance, released an official letter emphasizing that Harry and Markle remain non-working ‘private citizens' and, therefore, are not permitted to use their HRH titles.

The official letter also made it clear that “This position, distinct from the state and royal duties undertaken by the working royal family, and with the personal latitude it brings the couple in respect of financial independence and protection of their privacy as they would wish, will continue to be fully respected.” Beyond this, royal expert Russell Myers told PEOPLE that while the King and Prince William might hold different views about the Sussexes’ return to the UK, they are “completely united on the Sussexes not representing the royal family. It’s without a doubt how in sync they are on this matter.”

Furthermore, he addressed Prince William’s choice to remain estranged from his younger brother, noting that William has no intention of reconnecting.

He explained, “William’s view is clear—any relationship his father has with Harry or the Sussexes as a family is entirely up to him. But looking toward the future, he will have no relationship with them, in a working or private capacity whatsoever.” At the end of the day, the Sussexes’ new chapter in the UK remains clouded with confusion, suspicion, and deep-seated doubt—explaining why the Royal Family is reportedly keeping their distance.
