Meghan Markle has faced countless painful rumors over the years, but one certainly takes the cake. The Duchess of Sussex has long been accused of using a surrogate and wearing a prop to fake a ‘baby bump’ for her pregnancies. Recently, the mother of two silenced gossip mongers with her wedding anniversary post on Instagram. The sweet mood board that featured an ultrasound image of baby Archie subtly put the rumors of using a surrogate to rest.
As reported by Nicki Swift, Markle, however, failed to understand that the ultrasound image doesn't necessarily prove she carried her children to term. The publication noted that she and Harry would likely still get ultrasound photos of their kids if they used a surrogate. Coming back to the anniversary post, what also caught the attention of royal fans was a black-and-white photo behind the ultrasound image that showed the Duchess visibly pregnant. The odd positioning of the bump had many convinced it was a prop underneath.
Rumors about Markle allegedly using a surrogate began in 2019, after reports emerged that she intended to give birth at home in Frogmore Cottage. Prince Archie was later delivered at Portland Hospital in London, nearly 20 miles away. The lack of transparency around the birth location ignited doubts about whether Markle used a surrogate. Adding to speculations, Harry revealed in his memoir, Spare, that Markle and he were back at Frogmore Cottage just two hours after Archie’s birth. Commenting on the same, a Palace source remarked, "How many women give birth and are home in two hours? That didn’t make sense unless Meghan didn’t deliver the child herself."
Just like Archie, rumors that Princess Lilibet was also conceived via surrogacy were rampant. Many argued that her birth in June 2021 came too soon after Markle had suffered a tragic miscarriage in July 2020. The mere 11-month difference led to conspiracy theories that the Princess was not born to Markle. In 2024, it did not help that Markle’s half-brother, Thomas Jr, shared a bizarre video on YouTube that accused his sister of faking her pregnancy. As reported by the New York Post, Thomas Jr donned a wig and a tiara, and stuffed a pillow to imitate a pregnant woman. He said during the bizarre impersonation, “I was just showing off the new bump I bought used on eBay out of Montecito.” Royal commentator Jenni Bond slammed the video and told the Daily Mail, “To have your own flesh and blood lead the assault must feel like the ultimate betrayal for Meghan.”
Markle’s half-brother isn't the only family member who has accused the Duchess of using a surrogate. Her half-sister, Samantha, and her father, Thomas, have also alleged that she used a surrogate mother. Samantha told journalist Dan Wootton, “My father said nine months before Archie was allegedly born that Meghan picked up her frozen eggs. I thought: ‘That makes sense, there would be a surrogate involved.”
