Ever since Meghan Markle’s guest appearance on MasterChef Australia was announced a few months ago, the anticipation around it had only grown more intense as days passed. This weekend, the actual episode aired on TV and instantly overtook the chatter in royal circles. Speculation had been rife over equations and conversations, but one contestant revealed in his video diary what it was like to actually speak with the Duchess of Sussex, and well, her husband, Prince Harry, might not exactly be on board with the idea.

Markle appeared as a guest judge for an immunity challenge when the prestigious cooking competition had reached a critical point, with only four contestants still in the game. The eliminated contestants were present in the gallery to cheer them on. When the Duchess’ arrival was announced, the entire room broke into exclamations and surprised faces. As the challenge began, Markle visited each contestant’s bench along with the MasterChef judges. After a sweet interaction with contestant Aaron Kher, she told him she was “really excited” for his dish, and wished him “good luck”. As she was leaving his station, a former contestant from above teased Kher, saying, “Aaron, you are a show off, mate,” prompting laughter from the entire gallery, with one former competitor cooing, “How cute!”

After the amusing situation passed, Kher admitted his real feelings during his conversation with Markle. “I am a little flustered. Trying to have a conversation with Meghan was, kind of, like trying to talk to your first crush,” he laughed. Interestingly enough, the Duke of Sussex video-called his wife right when Kher arrived at the judges’ table with his dish. Watch the video here!

After the light-hearted teasing, Kher took on some chopping duties for his dish, impressing the gallery and Markle, as she told judge Poh Ling Yeow, “He has great knife skills”. The Duchess is a culinary enthusiast and is quite fond of gardening and farm-to-table produce. For the immunity challenge, she had brought a bounty of vegetables and organic ingredients for the competitors, and asked them to prepare a meal that was “sentimental”.

Kher prepared Bang kuang char, pie tee cups, and fresh sambal for the challenge and received praise from the judges and Markle. He later appreciated her in an Instagram post as he wrote, “What is my life?! Not only did I get to cook for Meghan Markle, she also loved my sambal! Such a surreal experience and what a way to start finals week!! Meghan was absolutely lovely and lit up the entire MasterChef kitchen. Also…did I just get to FaceTime Prince Harry?!”

However, Kher did not end up winning immunity and therefore the chance to advance directly to the semi-finals. Fellow contestant Petro Papathomas won the immunity with a delectable dessert.
