The Duchess of Sussex was serving as a special guest judge on MasterChef Australia when production surprised her with a FaceTime call from her husband.
Midway through tasting the contestants' dishes, a staff member approached Markle carrying a phone. The staff told the Duchess that they got a phone call for her. Markle was perplexed at first, but once she saw the phone screen and realized it was her husband calling, she exclaimed, “Hi, my love!” She then took the phone from the staff and proceeded to introduce her husband to the other judges, Poh Ling Yeow, Sofia Levin and Jean-Christophe Novelli, and later directed the phone towards the contestants.
Harry greeted the room with a cheerful “G’day” before joking, “What’s going on? Have I interrupted something important?” Markle replied, “Well, we’re actually in the middle of tasting all the dishes. We have four incredible cooks here. It’s amazing; they are so talented! We wish you were here.” She then explained to the judges that Harry was in Canberra visiting veterans before turning the camera back to him. “I can see the chandeliers in the background; they look very nice,” Harry observed before asking to see the dishes.
“I wish you could try this. These dishes are fantastic, really great dishes,” Markle told him. “There’s a hot sauce... and it is so good! I think it's too much for you. It’s spicy.” Harry laughed before wrapping up the call, saying, “Well, go and enjoy it. I’m very sorry to disturb you. All is well here. I’ll see you later.” As soon as the call ended, the judges and contestants applauded, with one contestant exclaiming, “That’s crazy!”
The sweet moment was filmed during the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s visit to Australia in April and aired on the July 26 episode of the popular cooking competition. The episode marked another food-focused TV appearance for Markle, who previously guest-judged Chopped Junior in 2016 and, more recently, hosted her own Netflix lifestyle series, With Love, Meghan. The surprise FaceTime call from Harry, however, stole the show, with many viewers calling it one of the episode’s sweetest moments.
Ahead of the broadcast, former MasterChef Australia post-producer Alexandria Funnell shared behind-the-scenes details on TikTok after speaking with a current crew member. According to Funnell, the producer described Markle as “so great” and “really good at judging.” PEOPLE! added that even the crew members praised Markle and shared how she “was so nice to all the crew, had a good sense of humor, and was just a normal human." She continued, “Her entourage was only two people, and they were so great, too.”
