Prince William Shares Hilarious Story of Being Mistaken for Music Legend Prince and Asked to Sing
Seated alongside Cate Blanchett, Hannah Waddingham, Robert Irwin, and Jorja Smith, he recalled the time a stranger mistook him for the music legend!
Prince William had quite the story to tell during his appearance on The Graham Norton Show. Seated alongside Cate Blanchett, Hannah Waddingham, Robert Irwin, and Jorja Smith, he recalled the time a stranger mistook him for the late music legend Prince!

William was on the show to spotlight the Earthshot Prize. During the conversation, he revealed that people fail to recognize him “quite regularly.” “I went to a place in Somerset and was looking around some of the local communities there, and one lovely gentleman looked up at me from his seat and said, ‘When are you going to sing?’” He shared that he had been approached with all sorts of requests by people, but this took him by surprise. “I’m sorry, what do you mean?” he asked the man.
William recalled the man having said, “When are you going to sing your performance?” before a woman standing behind him tapped the man's arm and clarified, “No, no, he's not that prince.” As it turned out, the man was hoping to hear the heir to the throne sing Prince's hit song Purple Rain. Unfortunately for him, William admitted he didn't actually know the lyrics!

William also looked back on meeting Taylor Swift backstage at Wembley Stadium in June 2024, when he joined the singer for a selfie. At the time, he didn't think much of the photo, only later realizing it was the first picture Swift shared of her with her then-boyfriend, Travis Kelce.
“I hadn’t appreciated the significance, and actually, I was trying to move him out of the photo, and he just kept coming back in,” William joked. “I kept trying to move him out, so it was just me, Taylor and the children.”

William's sit-down comes in the heels of the upcoming Earthshot Prize in Mumbai next month. Launched in 2020, the initiative backs people coming up with solutions to some of the world's biggest environmental problems.
