King Charles Offered an Olive Branch, But Andrew Reportedly Declined His Invitation
Despite being given an excellent choice to clear the air, Andrew has declined to reunite with Charles, missing an opportunity to resolve their differences.
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has remained estranged from his elder brother, King Charles, for most of the year, with the two barely communicating despite living just miles apart. The former Duke of York was absent from nearly all major royal events, last appearing in public on June 28 at the Sandringham Horse Driving Trials in an unofficial capacity to support Prince Edward and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh. As the royal family enjoys their annual summer sojourn at Balmoral in Scotland, it was initially expected that the monarch wouldn't allow his younger brother to mingle in their company. However, in a surprising turn of events, the King extended an olive branch to the disgraced duke.
According to GB News, Andrew has turned down an invitation from King Charles to join the royal family in Balmoral. It has been reported that the former duke is grappling with an agonizing feeling of being treated as an "outcast." Despite being offered a chance to clear the air, Mountbatten-Windsor has declined to reunite with Charles, missing an opportunity to resolve their differences. "Andrew feels he's been abandoned. He feels like he is no longer part of the family," a close friend of the former Duke stated. "He was invited but has got no great desire to be at Balmoral, as he has nothing to gain and would be treated as an outcast," the source added. The insider further expressed that Andrew questioned the purpose of traveling for a holiday only to feel unwelcome or out of place, likening this experience to being an "elephant in the room."
The tension between Charles and his younger brother has continued to grow after the monarch stripped Mountbatten-Windsor of his titles as Prince and Duke of York and, by February, compelled him to leave Royal Lodge in Windsor. Furthermore, that same month, Andrew was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office, allegations he has consistently denied. He is now living a solitary life at Marsh Farm on the Sandringham estate in Norfolk, far removed from his former luxurious lifestyle as a working royal. His last significant family interaction was likely at the Duchess of Kent's funeral in September of 2025. Last year at Balmoral, he also appeared largely isolated during his two-week stay.
His isolation is further reflected by the absence of his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson and daughters, Beatrice and Eugenie, who have kept their distance following the severe allegations leveled against him. Except for Prince Edward, none of the other royal family members have been seen visiting Andrew at his new residence. Meanwhile, the annual royal summer gathering at Balmoral is expected to proceed without him, with around 30 family members joining King Charles, who has arrived to begin his quiet retreat and received a warm welcome at the castle.
