King Charles Plans a Quiet Balmoral Summer as Doctors Give an Update on His Health

The picturesque Scottish setting will allow King Charles to recharge before returning to official duties.

After a rather packed summer, which ended with their appearance at the reception for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, it’s time for King Charles and Queen Camilla to take their annual vacation. They have now retired to the Scottish Highlands to have a peaceful and relaxing time, while enjoying each other’s company. This happens to be one of their favorite summer traditions; after all, they also spent their honeymoon there, many years ago. In fact, after a while of rest and recuperation, the King and Queen will also be hosting the extended members of the Royal family for an annual get-together at Balmoral Castle. 

The beautiful castle is apparently only a short Land Rover ride away, and it is going to open its doors shortly, for another beloved tradition for the monarch. It’s at the end of the school summer holidays, and therefore, all the kids get to have one last fun party and have a great time.

Charles began his vacation by attending the Mey Highland Games in Caithness, Scotland, and also 'the King’s rose' at the Gardens of Mey. However, it’s important to note that the King’s health remains an important part of the picture, as well.

According to royal expert Emily Andrews, Charles is also said to be in particularly good form this year, with his engagements almost going back to his pre-cancer levels. Although Charles is still receiving treatment, which is believed to be immunotherapy, Andrews told Woman & Home that his doctors apparently are “very pleased” with his progress. The King’s summer plans will offer the perfect balance between rest, fun, family, and duty. He is also expected to enjoy some of his favorite Highland pastimes like fishing and painting. 

In the coming weeks, the King is set for a formal weekend as he and Camilla will spend time with the new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, and his wife, Marie-France van Heel. While discussing these duties, Andrews added, “I’m sure he’ll also he and Camilla will also be at the Braemar Gathering at the Cairngorms National Park, a firm favourite of the late Queen.” In fact, for Charles, this will also be an opportunity to embrace the slower pace of Highland life, surrounded by the landscapes and traditions he has cherished for decades. The setting will definitely allow him to recharge before returning to his official duties.
