Kate's Old Comments on William and Harry's Closeness Resurface — and the Irony Is Hard to Miss
Kate Middleton once made a sweet remark about Prince William and Prince Harry's bond and now their relationship is the exact opposite.
Today, it feels like there didn’t exist a time when Prince William and Prince Harry were extremely close. But that era was real and is possibly long gone. A bond forged by love and trauma, in equal parts, the two princes were each other’s rocks for a long time. Even Kate Middleton once talked about how close the siblings were. However, her resurfaced statements now seem glaringly ironic, as the two brothers couldn’t be more apart now.
In 2017, the then-Duchess of Cambridge had an open and honest conversation about mental health with William and Harry for their joint Heads Together charity campaign. “Considering everything that you boys sadly went through and the trauma that you experienced…. I do think it's incredible how strong and how you've been able to cope, really, and I put that down to your really early years childhood experience, but also the relationship that you've got. You're amazingly close," she said to them, via Hello!
The then-Duke of Cambridge quipped, “Most of the time!” But soon after, his wife highlighted her point again, “Some families sadly aren't as lucky as you guys have been." William agreed, saying, “We have been brought closer because of the circumstances as well; that's the thing, you know you are uniquely bonded because of what we've been through."
As it turned out, nine years later, the once 'amazingly close' brothers are no longer on speaking terms, according to reports. Ever since Harry and Meghan Markle left the monarchy in 2020, they have been estranged from William and Middleton. Even when the Sussexes reunited with King Charles for a private meeting at Highgrove last month, the Prince and Princess of Wales kept their distance from the joyous occasion. Instead, they chose to tend to their busy diaries.
Last week, Harry and Markle returned to the UK with their kids, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, for an extended stay. It seems unlikely that the two warring parties would reconcile. However, it is expected that William and Harry may cross paths on certain occasions, such as their cousin Eliza Spencer’s upcoming wedding or Princess Diana’s 30th death anniversary next year. Royal fans can only hope the two brothers will mend fences at some point.
Interestingly, both families would be preparing for a big transition at the moment. Archie and Lilibet will likely join their new UK schools this month, while Prince George will begin his secondary education at Eton College soon.
