Kate Middleton Has Worn the Same Bee Earrings to Manchester Twice — And for a Special Reason
On June 4, Kate Middleton spent some time with cancer patients at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester.
Kate Middleton’s fashion and jewelry choices rarely go unnoticed, and it's not just because of their elegance but also because of the hidden meaning and tribute they often carry. Over the years, the Princess of Wales has built a reputation for using clothing and accessories to secretly honor people, places, and causes that are extremely close to her heart. For instance, on several occasions, we have seen her pay tribute to two of the most beloved royals, Princess Diana and Queen Elizabeth II. Now, during her recent visit to Manchester, Middleton once again drew attention with a pair of elegant bee-themed hoop earrings and the hidden meaning behind them.
On Thursday, June 4, the Princess spent some time with cancer patients at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester. For the meaningful outing, she revived an elegant blue coat dress that she previously wore in 2021. The royal completed her look with a matching Astley Clarke lapis lazuli pendant and bee-themed earrings. As reported by the Town and Country Magazine, the delicate bee and honeycomb details on the earrings are said to be a subtle nod to the city's identity. The worker bee has long stood as a symbol of Manchester city.
Manchester City Council states, “The Manchester worker bee is one of the best-known symbols of Manchester and has been an emblem for the city for over 150 years. The bee denotes Mancunians’ hard work ethic and the city being a hive of activity. It has also come to represent the sense of unity in our great city.” It's worth noting that this is not the first time Middleton chose to wear the bee earrings for a visit to Manchester. She previously wore them during a 2022 royal engagement alongside Prince William.
Back then, the couple attended the opening ceremony of the Glade of Light Memorial at Manchester Cathedral, which was created to honor the victims of the 2017 Manchester Arena terror attack following an Ariana Grande concert. This makes the jewelry choice appear all the more thoughtful and symbolic. During the previous visit, the Princess of Wales even confirmed the thoughtful gesture, reportedly telling one person that she was “wearing bees in tribute." Additionally, she is also known to be an enthusiastic beekeeper. While speaking at an engagement in March, William revealed, “Catherine’s got her own bees. She knows a lot about bees.”
Meanwhile, at the cancer centre, Middleton shared an emotional moment as she watched a cancer survivor named Claire Lorente ring the bell, marking the end of her chemotherapy treatment. While talking to Lorente’s partner, the Princess acknowledged the emotional toll cancer takes not just on patients but also on those closest to them. Sharing her own experience, she said, "I know how hard it was for the children and my parents. You go through it with them."
