Prince Edward and Duchess Sophie’s Evolving Roles in the Monarchy’s Transformation

The royal family is undergoing a major revamp that could significantly shake things up, especially with two of their key members now being tipped for expanded roles. Since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped back from their royal duties, Prince William and Princess Kate have been shouldering a major chunk of the responsibility. But it's no secret that Prince Edward and Duchess Sophie have quietly become two of the most dependable figures in the monarchy in recent years. So much so that Sophie has been nicknamed the royals' 'secret weapon,' and now she has an even bigger responsibility to her name.
Having earned a reputation as one of the Firm's most hardworking and approachable members, Sophie now has a new role to conquer. The Duchess has been named the royal patron of the Armed Forces Para-Snowsport Team. While it is a big responsibility, body language expert Darren Stanton says Edward and Sophie's journey is only just starting, and with time they will become increasingly important to the monarchy.
Talking on behalf of Betfair Casino (via Express), the expert shared, "Sophie and Edward will be used more and more as the years go on." He elaborated, "And looking at this, the Royal Family is in really good hands. Sophie in particular seems as though she would take to a more prominent role like a duck to water.” It seems like there are a lot of expectations mounted on Sophie and Edward. Talking previously in a conversation with the Mirror, the Duchess shared, “I like to fly under the radar. It’s all very well being a secret weapon, but if no one knows, maybe it's too secret.”
She continued, “I suppose I should take it as a backhanded compliment. I don’t see myself in a frontline position per se; that said, admittedly, there are fewer working members of the family these days, so I suppose more and more I'm becoming less secretive. I just wonder what they are going to describe me as next!" For now, Sophie may still prefer to stay under the radar. But as her royal responsibilities expand, her "secret weapon" status may not remain quite so secret for long.
Interestingly, Sophie's new role may also be a point of reconciliation for her and Harry. While there is no confirmation of an actual reunion, the Duchess’s new patronage has placed her in a field that has been central to Harry’s work for years. As the new royal patron of the AFPST, Sophie will support wounded, injured, and sick military personnel and veterans through adaptive sport, a mission that closely mirrors the work behind Harry’s Invictus Games. And maybe that will give these two a way to reach common ground in the future.
