After a couple of years out of the spotlight, Princess Kate could be preparing for a much larger international role alongside Prince William now that she is finally taking small yet significant steps to get back in the game. Reports suggest that she might join the latter for a major overseas tour tied to the Earthshot Prize later this year. After the success of her recent trip to Italy, many royal insiders and commentators believe that the princess is entering a new phase, consisting of high-profile international engagements, which would only elevate her stance on the world stage as the future queen.

India is at the center of the rumors, with the couple reportedly planning a joint visit this autumn for Prince William’s annual Earthshot Prize ceremony, which is scheduled to take place in Mumbai this year. Noted royal expert and author Russell Myers spoke on the podcast, Pod Save the King, about this and reflected on how Kate’s involvement will be of utmost importance, not just because of the monarchy but also Britain’s diplomacy. He explained, “She is prepared to go and accompany William not only for the Earthshot trip, but the people in the government and the foreign office will be leaping around the room, I imagine.” He also noted how India isn’t just a “potential huge trading partner” but also a significant country in the global scenario, “with the war in Ukraine and the state of trade and the environment as well.”

It won’t be the first time for the Wales couple to be visiting India. They did so in 2016, exactly ten years ago, for a week-long tour that also included exploring the neighboring country, Bhutan. Hence, Myers feels a return could involve more than just the environmental awards ceremony. He expressed, “I think they will not only take on Mumbai for Earthshot, but they’ll probably take one or two extra steps.” He also predicted that the couple would meet with the Indian Prime Minister in Delhi during the tour. This speculation follows Prince William’s recent reassurance that his wife is eager to resume international travel as she steps back into public duties following her recovery from cancer.

Kate’s recent two-day visit to Italy appears to have solidified and proved just how important her presence remains to the monarchy internationally. Prior to that trip, the Princess of Wales had not undertaken an overseas royal engagement since 2024, the grim year of her cancer diagnosis. Myers believes it was something the public had been “missing.” While addressing her return to the global stage, he shared, “These are huge, huge moments that we’ve been really missing from the Prince and Princess of Wales. This is surely going to be just incredibly huge.” According to the Mirror, palace sources also revealed that plans for India are still in the early stages, though momentum is reportedly building up behind the scenes, albeit slowly.

The renewed international attention surrounding Kate also follows a particularly busy stretch for the royal family. This includes King Charles and Queen Camilla’s heavily publicized US visit in late April. Speaking to PEOPLE, Queen Elizabeth’s former press secretary, Ailsa Anderson, suggested that William and Kate are now “upping their game” internationally. “She is our future queen,” Anderson said while talking about Kate, adding, “As Queen Elizabeth used to say, you have to be seen to be believed. She is glamorous, she is beautiful. She is warm and approachable.” With things clearly being at full throttle after Italy, the Princess of Wales may soon find herself taking on one of her biggest global roles yet.
