While Princess Eugenie surely must be excited to welcome a third baby into her life, today belongs to her son Ernest Brooksbank, who is the youngest in the family. The little one turned three years old on May 30. It’s extra special as it is the only birthday he’ll get to celebrate as the baby in the family until his younger sibling arrives. The special day has arrived during a period of massive change for the York family, with her father, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, constantly in the headlines. Yet, having a grounded family life remains at the center of Eugenie’s world.

One very adorable photo posted alongside her pregnancy announcement showed Ernest and his older brother, August, studying a baby scan of their future sibling. It offered a rare glimpse into the family's excitement about the months ahead. That photograph also captured an important transition for Ernest himself. While wearing a blue soccer kit, the toddler appeared intrigued by the scan as he quietly prepared to become a big brother for the first time. The photo quickly became one of the most talked-about family moments from Eugenie's pregnancy announcement. After all, it served as a reminder that while much attention often focuses on the royals themselves, there are significant changes happening within the family's youngest generation.

The occasion has also prompted revived attention on one of Eugenie's most heartfelt tributes to her son. As she celebrated the youngster’s second birthday last year, the princess shared a photograph of Ernest on Instagram alongside the caption: “Happy Birthday, my darling Ernie. 2 today!” The post also took a sentimental turn as she looked back upon his arrival and wrote, “I wanted to share the news that we had our little boy, Ernest George Ronnie Brooksbank, on 30th May 2023 at 8.49, weighing 7.1lbs. It's been an incredible two years. Always smiling, always laughing, always giving hugs and hello's, and making everyone happy. My golden boy, we love you!”

Other photographs shared over the years have highlighted the close connection between the two siblings, i.e., Ernest and his older brother August. In one image shared on Eugenie’s Instagram handle, the brothers walked hand in hand, while another showed them gardening together.  Together, the images shed light on a tight-knit family unit and make fans feel that the arrival of a new sibling will only add another dimension to that relationship rather than change it.

Another interesting fact about Ernest is the significance of his one-of-a-kind name. Eugenie took it upon herself to explain this with one of her Instagram posts as she announced his birth in 2023. In the post announcing his arrival, she captioned it, “He is named after his great-great-great-grandfather George, his Grandpa George, and my Grandpa Ronald.” While Ernest currently sits 15th in the line of succession, behind August and Eugenie, today’s celebrations seem to be far from focusing on royal rankings. Instead, as the York family navigates a year of both challenges and good news, Ernest's third birthday milestone offers a welcome opportunity to celebrate a little boy who remains, by his mother’s own words, her “golden boy.”
