Prince William's Latest Construction Site Photo Has Fans Divided Over His Hammering Technique

Prince William faced online mockery after a photo from his latest construction site went viral, but supporters say the internet missed the full story.

Prince William always minds his own business and helps as many people as he can along the war. During one such endeavour, in which the Duchy of Cornwall built 10 sustainable homes, the Prince of Wales found himself in the middle of online trolling over a single snap. Yes, the future King rolled up his sleeves and picked up a hammer and nail, only for the internet to become fixated on one photo.

Far from the palace walls, William travelled to St Mary's in the Isles of Scilly on May 22, 2026, visiting a new housing development being built through the Duchy of Cornwall. The heir apparent toured the site to see progress on 10 sustainable homes designed to help tackle the islands' long-running housing shortage and support local residents and key workers. Sharing the same on Instagram, the Prince gave his followers a look inside the visit by posting a carousel of images. However, one image ended up drawing more attention than the rest.

The post was captioned as, “Opening homes committed to by @theduchyofcornwall as a step towards easing housing pressures on the Isles of Scilly. These sustainable houses, the first built on the island for 20 years, support the future of island life, available to those who have lived on Scilly for more than five years or who currently work there.”

The picture showed the royal with a hammer and nail in hand, and it did not take long for social media users on X to start picking apart the way he was holding the tools. He appeared to hold the hammer with his right hand while his left hovered close to the nail, pinching it against the wood as he prepared to drive it into the frame. One user wrote, “Well done William,” along with a close-up of the picture. A second netizen playfully said, "They set the nail for him before he even arrived because they were afraid he might hurt his little finger," while a third mocked the Prince by stating, "Why put your hand there since you’re not holding the nail?  And he even came prepared with an helmet."

However, William’s supporters were not far behind as they rushed to defend the out-of-context image. After the full video and additional official photos from the day began making the rounds online, many argued that the criticism had missed key context. One individual remarked, “If there was ever a perfect example of why context is essential in the age of social media, this post is it. In the video, Prince William can clearly be seen holding the nail before releasing it, which is when the picture was taken," while a second added, "Once the nail was set, why on earth would anyone think he would continue holding on to it? Not necessary, and he didn't want to injure himself." The image, which started the online debate, is still up on the Wales Family’s Instagram page, and William clearly does not seem to be bothered by it
