‘Work-Shy’ William and Kate Keep Pulling Back — and the ‘School Run’ Excuse No Longer Holds
Prince William's recent 'chaotic' school-run comment has sparked scrutiny, with some experts viewing it as a cover for fewer royal duties.
Prince William and Princess Kate, since welcoming their three children, have fought tooth and nail to protect their family life, prioritizing school runs and hands-on parenting. In his Heart Breakfast interview, William — long labelled as 'work-shy' — described the school-run rituals as total 'chaos,' a seemingly innocuous remark that has caught the attention of critics — is it just a facade to deflect attention from his fewer royal engagements?
Sure enough, William and Kate are amazing parents to George, Charlotte, and Louis. But it is also true that, despite having a village of staff, drivers, and longtime nanny Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo to help them, the Waleses have projected being overburdened by school runs and parenting duties. This has not escaped the watchful eyes of experts, with Charlotte Cripps of The Independent urging them to cut the act, while Liz Jones of the Daily Mail questioning whether the couple could truly relate to ordinary parenting struggles with such privilege. Multiple outlets have also reported that they scaled back royal duties to focus on family life, leaving critics wondering whether they are coasting on a sparse rota behind carefully crafted royal PR.
William's recent comments about George occasionally staying over at Lambrook should further ease the load off the Waleses backs. That does not mean William and Kate do not parent their children. Rather, critics are taking issue with it being presented as if they are managing everything on their own, despite having support that most families could only imagine. Kate has described Early Years as her life's work, while William spotlights homelessness as a passion project. However, public engagements tend to slow down during school holidays, leading to growing speculation that the couple's hands-on image is being used to soften scrutiny over their reduced royal duties.
Against this context, William's recent comments about multitasking during school runs with his children on Heart Radio's The Breakfast Show prove interesting. He told the hosts, "Yes, there are a lot of jam sandwiches taken in the car, usually. Louis is very kind. He'll leave jam fingerprints throughout the car, which is really helpful." He added, "It can be [chaotic]… you've got to get the guitar in the car… Are we boarding? Are we not? Are we seeing friends or are we not,'" urging Charlotte and Louis not to fight over the playlist in the morning.
