Prince William and Kate Middleton, known as the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay in Scotland, traveled to a special town for a public engagement on a drizzling Thursday afternoon. The couple arrived by ferry in their namesake town, Rothesay, for a day on the west coast. The trip will also mark their first visit to the Isle of Bute.

Smiling, William and Middleton made their first stop at the Bute Shinty Club, where they learned how the sports venue acts as a vibrant social hub for residents. The pair, who themselves are quite sporty, would have certainly understood the importance of such a place in a community. Channeling her field hockey roots, the Duchess of Rothesay even tried her hand at playing shinty on the pitch. Her husband proudly looked on as she hit the ball.

The main purpose of their visit to the Isle of Bute this week is to celebrate local community initiatives. This latest trip is a part of their ongoing effort to engage with Scottish island life. Last year, William and Middleton traveled to Iona and Mull. Their trip this week also came on the heels of Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland signing a joint memorandum of understanding, which essentially signaled possible referendums to secure independence from the UK.

The Duke and Duchess of Rothesay opted for a dark color palette for the visit. While William wore dark jeans, an olive-green jacket, and boots, Middleton donned a brown polo-neck shirt, matching jeans, knee-high boots, and a dark Burberry trench coat. While the couple was essentially dressed to weather the unpredictable conditions, they also looked rather stylish. The Duchess was also seemingly presented with a rose on her arrival that she dutifully carried during her time at the club.

The pair met with onlookers and watched the shinty training sessions at the club. They were grinning and appeared unruffled by the ongoing drama in their personal lives. Just a day before their visit, Buckingham Palace released an unprecedented statement about Charles Spencer’s new book on Princess Diana, possibly prompted by an excerpt published by the Daily Mail this week. The excerpt revealed explosive details about King Charles’ shocking reaction to the public outpouring of grief following Diana’s tragic death.

William’s estranged brother, Prince Harry, will also make a public appearance in the UK on Thursday. He is set to attend the Invictus Spirit Gala and Awards. However, it is unclear if he will be joined by Meghan Markle.
