Charles Spencer’s new book about his older sister, Princess Diana, was expected to create waves. But what eventually transpired, even before its slated September release, was shocking. Hours after four copies of the book were stolen from a lorry in the Netherlands, King Charles released a rare statement on the upcoming biography.

Buckingham Palace admittedly broke 'principle' to make an unprecedented comment on the content of Swan Song. “While we do not comment on books as a matter of principle, His Majesty is mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and color memory in ways others do not recognize, even many years after such a loss,” the statement read.

The surprise comment may have been prompted by an excerpt published by the Daily Mail this week, where Spencer revealed Charles’ shocking reaction to the public outpouring of grief following Diana’s death. “Prince Charles continued his stream of anger, without me interrupting. Then he stopped. I assumed the pause signaled an effort to bring himself under control, but then he unleashed down the phone what I have always taken to be his pent-up contempt for Diana, and his horror that the world was so bowled over by her death. ‘Rest assured,’ he hissed, ‘we’ll forget her soon enough!” the excerpt said.

After Diana’s untimely and tragic demise in 1997, Buckingham Palace gates were flooded with flowers and cards for the People’s Princess. Millions across the globe mourned the loss. The public reaction to the fatal accident was so severe that Diana was given a royal ceremonial funeral despite not being a part of the monarchy anymore.

Spencer promised to correct long-standing “untruths” and give a brother’s perspective on the ups and downs of Diana’s tumultuous life through Swan Song. While whatever revelations awaited in the book were sure to shake royal fans, what has happened in the run-up to the release has further intensified the chatter around it.

Diana had naturally been a central figure in her son, Prince Harry’s memoir Spare as well. He wrote widely about the impact of her death on him and her continued influence on his life.
