Prince William and Kate Middleton are set to be the future of the royal family and are playing an active role in ushering in the modern era for the British monarchy. All members of the family are facing public scrutiny with a lot of controversy, drama and scandals surrounding them in the past few years. At a time like this, balancing two starkly contrasting values is nothing short of walking a tightrope. But the royal couple has been doing it, and that too with ease, for almost a decade.

Simon Case, who had served as William’s private secretary between 2018 and 2020, spoke to royal expert Russell Myers for his new book, William and Catherine: The Monarchy's New Era: The Inside Story. Case drew attention to the issues that the couple has tackled, such as “environmental protection, mental health, focus on the early years, addictions, homelessness”, saying these causes were “entirely focused on the basic needs of society in order to flourish”.

Case further pointed out why the issues that William and Kate have chosen and consistently worked towards mattered, especially in the digital age. “The times have changed, the reach of the Royal Family and their individual profiles is absolutely extraordinary in the digital age. But by centering on specific issues, you know they mean business, that if they are going to take on an issue, it's because they care and they want to make a difference,” he said, according to Marie Claire.

Royal family members are often thought of as workaholics who seemingly put their work before family time. However, the Prince and Princess of Wales, in a true modern sense, have proven to be an exception to this belief. While William and Kate are dedicated royals, committed to their charitable work, they are also a solid family unit. The royal couple has maintained an equilibrium between family and work.

Case further added, “Coupled with their attention to their own family, and how that will in turn affect the wider institution, these are the fundamental principles of who they are as people.” He also mentioned that William and Kate’s dedication to working on close family relationships is evident in their actual work. “You have fundamentally misunderstood them as people if you don't acknowledge that while family may be important to them, it's not something you can take for granted; close family is something you actually have to work at. That same level of dedication is evident in their work,” Case said.
