After King Charles 'spared' 55 minutes for tea with Prince Harry, during his latest visit to the UK, reports claimed that the sovereign was more 'frustrated' with Prince William than his 'prodigal' son. In the aftermath of the same, insiders now suggest that Harry’s allies are deliberately 'driving a wedge' between Charles and William.

A source quoted by the Daily Mail said that those briefing on Harry’s behalf are guilty of overplaying their hand. “Whoever is behind this seems to have mistaken a brief tea and a slice of cake for the Treaty of Versailles,” the insider quipped, adding, “It is also clear there are fears that some in ‘Team Harry’ may be using this month’s ‘baby step’ forwards in the broken relationship between father and son to, perhaps sinisterly, drive a wedge between the King and his elder son and heir.”

The suspicion has left the courtiers uneasy. Another insider told the tabloid that the crafted leaks from Harry’s camp are doing more harm than good. “These syrupy briefings from supposed Sussex sources are precisely why the King and the royal family are so hesitant to embark on any road to rapprochement. If the intention is to encourage a rebuilding of trust and relationships, they serve the precise opposite effect.”

The same source stressed that Charles and William’s partnership is the cornerstone of the modern monarchy. “As last week’s State Visit clearly demonstrated, the power and impact of the modern monarchy lies in the unshakeable bond between the King and the Prince of Wales, supported by other working members of the family.” The sources made it clear that Harry’s role, if any, is only peripheral. Another insider explained, “The King is a forgiving man but has been absolutely clear in upholding his late mother’s decision that there cannot be ‘half-in, half-out’ members of the working royal family.”

Meanwhile, Harry’s spokesperson absolutely pushed back against this narrative, saying, “The Duke has made it clear that ‘the focus has to be on his dad,’ beyond that, and on any other issues as it relates to his family, we won’t be commenting.” However, there have been numerous reports about the tensions between Charles and William, long before Harry met the King, earlier this month. According to multiple reports, Charles and William’s relationship has become so fractured that they 'barely speak.' Most of their communication is filtered through private secretaries, with The Daily Beast noting that father and son “do not meet informally as a rule.”

Even during the royal family’s summer holiday at Balmoral, Tom Sykes reported that Charles “withdrew to the privacy of his own home, Birkhall,” while William kept his distance. This frosty relationship, he suggests, is rooted in old wounds. William’s experience of his parents’ bitter marriage breakdown — with Charles’s high-profile affair with Camilla — left scars that shaped a bond never truly repaired. Charles has also faced criticism for being an 'absent father' and is said to remain distant from his grandchildren.
