Prince Harry Reveals Why He Feels Diana’s Famous Royal Title Was Never Enough for Her
Prince Harry has revealed that there was one surprising reason he never felt Diana's title truly captured who his mother truly was.
Decades after her tragic passing, Princess Diana remains one of the most widely admired and deeply cherished figures in royal history. To millions around the globe, she was simply "The People's Princess." Yet despite the profound affection behind that title, Prince Harry once revealed why he felt it—and even the word "princess" itself—never truly captured who his mother was. In his memoir Spare, the Duke of Sussex explained why the label of "princess" never seemed enough to describe Diana. "Although my mother was a princess, named after a goddess, both those terms always felt weak, inadequate," he reflected. "People routinely compared her to icons and saints, from Nelson Mandela to Mother Teresa to Joan of Arc, but every such comparison, while lofty and loving, also felt wide of the mark. The most recognizable woman on the planet, one of the most beloved, my mother was simply indescribable, that was the plain truth."
While the title gave Diana global recognition, it apparently also took away from her own identity. Talking about it, the Princess had once shared, "I felt that my personality was taken away from me, and I was taken over by the royal machine." Detailing the cons of the royal tag, Diana during the 1995 BBC Panorama interview continued, "The day I walked down the aisle at St. Paul's Cathedral, I felt that my personality was taken away from me, and I was taken over by the royal machine."
As HELLO! highlighted, although many people dream of becoming a princess, Diana often spoke openly about how difficult life inside the royal family could be. Behind the glamour and public appearances, she admitted to struggling with the relentless demands of royal life. Despite those challenges, Diana found purpose through her charity work and dedication to helping others. She once said, "Nothing brings me more happiness than trying to help the most vulnerable people in society."
