Prince Harry’s Emotional UK Trip Included a Return to Princess Diana’s Safe Haven
After reuniting with King Charles, Harry reportedly made another deeply personal stop that was just as meaningful.
With Prince Harry in the UK, one would expect an emotional reunion with his family, and this time the speculations turned true as the Prince finally met his father. And, for the first time in years, even his kids, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, met their grandfather. Just as expected, Harry, while reconciling with his father, did not let go of his bond with his mother. The Duke of Sussex traveled to Britain this month for the one-year countdown to the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham, with Meghan Markle, Prince Archie, and Princess Lilibet joining him later. During the visit, Harry reunited with King Charles at Highgrove House. Now, reports suggest the prince also took time for a deeply personal visit to a place that has always connected him to his late mother, Princess Diana.
According to The Sun, Harry was seen leaving Althorp House in Northamptonshire on Friday, just days after what would have been the late Princess' 65th birthday on July 1. The sprawling 13,000-acre estate has belonged to the Spencer family for more than 500 years and is one of the places most closely linked to Diana's childhood and memory. Diana moved to Althorp when she was 14 after her father inherited the title of Earl Spencer.
The place is all the more meaningful for Harry, as following the tragic death of his mother in 1997, she was laid to rest on a secluded island in the middle of the estate's Round Oval lake. While Althorp opens to visitors during parts of the summer, Diana's final resting place remains private and inaccessible to the public. However, for Harry, it is expected to stay accessible.
The estate is now home to Diana's brother, Charles Spencer, who has often spoken about his responsibility as the family's caretaker. In a past interview with CBS, he reflected on living there, saying he always remembers that he is simply "passing through" while future generations create their own memories at the historic home. Charles is also said to be supportive of Harry and Markle; hence, the former's reported visit doesn't come as a shock to many.
The outlet also reported how Harry hopes to introduce Archie and Lilibet to their grandmother's resting place. According to The Sun, the Duke wants his children to understand their family history and pay their respects to Diana. It is not yet known whether Archie and Lilibet visited Althorp during this trip or are planning to do so later. Markle, on the other hand, previously visited Diana's grave in 2022 to mark the 25th anniversary of her death, but the couple's children have never been there.
The visit to Althorp followed another significant family moment. After attending the Invictus Games countdown event, Harry, Meghan, Archie, and Lilibet reportedly met Charles at Highgrove House. The reunion was especially meaningful as it marked the first time the King had seen his California-based grandchildren since the late Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2022.
