Prince Harry Admits Feeling ‘Completely Powerless’ and ‘Numb’ in Heartbreaking New Speech
Prince Harry gets real about feeling lost and powerless and how being a parent helped him see asking for help differently
Prince Harry is on his third day of the Australian trip alongside his wife, Meghan Markle, and has delivered an emotional speech at the InterEdge Summit in Melbourne. He gave a keynote address to business leaders and mental health advocates at the event. The Duke effortlessly opened up about his emotional struggles, especially dealing with grief in the public eye.
Harry started the speech at the stage of Centrepiece conference venue by saying (via Hello! Magazine), “When I was invited to speak at this summit, I wasn’t sure whether I was expected to speak as someone who, despite everything, has their s--- together. Or as someone who, despite what it may look like, actually doesn’t have his s--- together.” He went on to say that even if his life has been anything but typical, the emotions that come with it are something most people can understand.
Harry made a heartbreaking confession about grief, pressure, and how much early-life experiences can stick with you. He especially emphasized the scrutiny of growing up in the spotlight to the room full of business leaders and delegates. He said, “In my experience, loss is disorienting at any age. Grief does not disappear because we ignore it. Experiencing that as a kid while in a goldfish bowl under constant surveillance, yes, that will have its challenges. And without purpose, it can break you.”
He did not hold back when talking about just how intense those moments were. He admitted there have been plenty of times when he has felt completely overwhelmed, like he was “lost, betrayed, or completely powerless.” He also shared how the pressure, both from the outside world and within himself, often felt nonstop. “For many years, I was numb to it, and perhaps that was easier then, but I also didn’t yet have the tools to deal with it,” Harry added.
Furthermore, the Duke also shared his experiences of fatherhood and how things have really changed for him since then. He revealed, “When a parent is overwhelmed, children feel it. When someone is supported, families feel it." He continued, "For me, one of the biggest shifts came when I realised that asking for help isn’t a weakness. It’s very much a form of strength.”
Events for the third day of the trip also included an Aboriginal walking tour in Melbourne, followed by a Youth Mental Health visit at Swinburne University. On day 4 in Sydney, Prince Harry is set to take part in a sailing event in Sydney Harbour alongside Invictus Australia. Later, he will attend a Super Rugby Pacific match at Allianz Stadium where the NSW Waratahs will face Moana Pasifika. At the same time, Markle will headline a high-end “Her Best Life” wellness retreat, including a speaking session, a photo with the Duchess, and a gala-style event.
