Buckingham Palace issued a statement following Prince Harry’s recent court loss and his explosive BBC interview. The royal family’s response comes after weeks of speculation over the Crown's stance as Harry pursued his legal battle to regain state-funded security. Having lost the court appeal, Harry sat down for an interview, sharing his wish to make up with his family. The Duke admitted his father, King Charles, hasn’t been speaking to him, given the court case.
As reported by People magazine, in response, a palace spokesperson discussed Harry’s case and stressed, "All of these issues have been examined repeatedly and meticulously by the courts, with the same conclusion reached on each occasion.” The statement seems to undermine Harry’s claim that the royal family had any influence over the court's judgment. As reported by InStyle, Harry had expressed feeling devastated and let down by Judge Sir Geoffrey Vos' ruling that found it reasonable to terminate his UK security given his step down as a working royal.
Vos said, "The Duke was, in effect, stepping in and out of the cohort of protection provided by RAVEC [the government’s Royal and VIP Executive Committee]. Outside the U.K., he was outside the cohort, but when in the U.K., his security would be considered as appropriate depending on the circumstances.” The judge added, “It was impossible, I said in my judgment, to say that this reasoning was illogical or inappropriate. Indeed, it seemed sensible."
Reflecting on the ruling, in his interview, Harry shared that it means his children will never be able to visit the UK again. He stressed, “I love my country, I always have done, despite what some people in that country have done... and I think that it's really quite sad that I won't be able to show my children my homeland." He expressed a desire for a royal reconciliation, but acknowledged that some family members may never forgive him for publishing his memoir, Spare. At the same time, he hinted that his father was blocking the risk assessment he needed to get his security back.
Meanwhile, the Palace has maintained that the decision on who gets the state security is up to the police and the Home Office, not them. However, things got complicated when Harry found out through his lawsuit that Palace staff are part of RAVEC, the committee that makes these decisions, as reported by Newsweek. During his interview, the Duke of Sussex also admitted he is in the dark about how his father’s health is progressing as he continues to undergo cancer treatment. As per reports, things are likely to only take a turn for the worse when Prince William becomes king, as he allegedly stands firmly against his brother's return.
