New Poll Reveals How People Really Feel About Harry and Meghan Not Returning as Working Royals
King Charles’ recent letter made it clear that they are in the country as private citizens and that their work is not associated with the Royal Family.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s return to the U.K. does not mean they have stepped back into their roles as working royals. King Charles’ recent letter made it clear that they are in the country as private citizens and that their work is not associated with the Royal Family. And now Britons have also made their feelings known.
As per GB News, a recent YouGov poll asked Britons which option best reflected their views on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s position within the Royal Family. The results offered a clear picture of where public opinion stands. Just 16% said they would like to see Harry and Markle return as working royals, while 51% would prefer the couple to remain non-working members. Another 33% said they were unsure.
The King’s letter confirmed that there has been no change to their status since they stepped down as working royals in 2020. The couple remain private citizens and can not use their HRH styles for commercial purposes, while any charitable work they take on is separate from the official work of the Royal Family. In short, the letter drew a clear line between the Sussexes and the working monarchy.
As reported by The Telegraph, the Sussexes were allegedly taken by surprise when the letter was issued. A spokesperson for the couple said, “We were a little surprised to not have been told about this in advance.” However, royal sources have pushed back on that account, saying the couple was made aware of the letter before it was publicly released on Monday afternoon.
Moreover, the letter has reportedly left Harry and Markle unhappy with the idea of being treated simply as private citizens. According to a source who spoke to the outlet, “The Sussexes prefer the term 'public figures,' and would have liked an acknowledgement that, on a personal level, they remained members of the Royal Family, despite no longer receiving public funding.”
The couple’s concerns also come as their security arrangements in the U.K. remain an ongoing issue. Harry and Markle are reportedly worried about how being described as private citizens could affect the way their security is viewed
