Meghan Markle Finally Finds Common Ground with Prince William on a Royal Food Debate
Prince William and Meghan Markle have seemingly found common ground, and this time it is based on their shared interest in food and scone spreads.
The royal family may be divided, but the great scone debate remains as lively as ever. Prince William and Meghan Markle are in no way on good terms, and with them not having met since Queen Elizabeth II's passing in 2022, the distance has only grown. However, with several unresolved conflicts and differences of opinion, the duo has seemingly found common ground, and this time it is based on their shared interest in food and scone spreads.
Just recently, William revealed that he has been following his late grandmother's example when it comes to putting either cream or jam first on his scones. During his conversation with hosts Jamie Theakston and Amanda Holden on Heart Breakfast, the Prince of Wales revealed that his grandma taught him that cream always goes first on scones, followed by jam. Settling the Cornish vs. Devonian debate, he added, "I love that I'm the authority on scones. I can only tell you what I learned from my grandmother, and she would definitely, she would have the cream on first." And just a few hours after his declaration, Markle came up with her own verdict.
While many anticipated an opposing opinion from the Duchess of Sussex, she surprisingly agreed with William. On her lifestyle brand As Ever's Instagram page, the Duchess shared a video of her scooping a generous amount of jam on her sliced scone that already had cream slathered on it. Sharing the video, the Duchess added, "Memorial weekend plans. Baking warm scones topped with our Strawberry or Raspberry Spread, Orange Blossom Honey, and Flower Sprinkles."
Further in the post, Markle shared her scone recipe and, detailing the serving instructions, added, "Serve with raw cream, our Strawberry Spread, our Orange Blossom Honey, and flower sprinkles." While both William and Markle sided with the cream-first approach on scones, former royal chef Darren McGrady seems to share a different story. Having worked in Buckingham Palace for 11 years, he shared, "Jam first or clotted cream first? Jam first at Buckingham Palace garden parties!"
Talking about it back in 2018, he shared on social media that during a visit to the Royal Cornwall Show, King Charles hinted at his own preference for the jam-first method when he noticed a young boy eating a scone the Devonian way and playfully asked, "Have you got that the right way round?" This beloved baked treat is a staple of royal afternoon tea and even took center stage at King Charles and Queen Camilla's 2005 wedding.
Just a few days back, even Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, was seen making scones at the Farmwise area with Chef Stefan Harris and Devon County Show President John Lee at the Devon County Show at Westpoint Arena in Exeter, England. And while there was no royal protocol dictating her way around the baking station, the moment perfectly highlighted a deeply ingrained British tradition.
