Meghan Markle Allegedly Uses a Clever Trick to Avoid Paparazzi — And It Works Nearly Every Time
Meghan Markle's quest for privacy has reached a new level, with insiders claiming disguises are now her go-to method to stay under the radar.
Meghan Markle has long spoken about her need for privacy and maintaining healthy boundaries as a public figure. In her Oprah Winfrey interview, she reflected on the toll relentless tabloid scrutiny and false media narratives had taken on her. Now, it appears the Duchess of Sussex has found a clever way to stay under the radar. According to sources, she relies on disguises, including hats, sunglasses, wigs, and baggy clothing, to avoid being recognized while going about her everyday life in Montecito.
On His Substack, Naughty But Nice, royal columnist Rob Shuter quotes insiders who spoke about the great lengths Markle allegedly takes to hide her identity in public. One said, "She doesn't want anyone to recognize her. Everything is carefully planned. The wig, the hat, the glasses—she believes it's the only way she can move around unnoticed." They stressed that her desire to wear disguises only intensified after her recent trip to the UK, where she wasn't photographed even once with her children, and successfully managed to sneak into Highgrove House. "After the UK, she's [Markle] become obsessed with staying invisible. Now she rarely leaves the house without some kind of disguise."
Wearing disguises allegedly has always been a part of Markle and Prince Harry's playbook. Shuter revealed that before the couple's romance went public, the Sussexes had attended a Halloween party in Toronto, dressed in unrecognizable costumes that helped them blend into everyday life. An insider scoffed, "She [Markle] acts like she's Michael Jackson. At this point, the disguise is probably attracting more attention than her face would."
The Duke of Sussex has referenced the Halloween party in his memoir, Spare, mentioning that he flew to Toronto in October 2016 to spend time with Markle at her home. There, they attended an apocalypse-themed party with Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank, and wore elaborate costumes that made it nearly impossible to recognize them. He penned, "If that's the Apocalypse, I thought, bring on the end of the world." Another funny anecdote involved him borrowing his 'Mad Max' costume from actor Tom Hardy. In her 2022 Netflix show, Harry & Meghan, he reminisced, "This might be our last shot to just go out and have fun."
It comes as no surprise that Markle uses disguises to hide her identity, considering she had done so multiple times back in 2019 in New York City for her rumored baby shower. Photos obtained by the Daily Mail showed the pregnant Duchess lying low and wearing dark colors along with a tweed baker boy cap. That summer, she also managed to board a flight in Canada without being spotted wearing black clothes and a huge baseball cap.
