Kate Middleton, as the patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, is often greeted with a standing ovation whenever she graces the Wimbledon championship. This year, the Princess of Wales was accompanied by her husband, Prince William, and their two eldest children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte. As she made her way down the stairs to the Royal Box, a heartwarming gesture from Hollywood actor Matthew McConaughey caught the attention of eagle-eyed viewers watching from home.

The Gentlemen’s Singles final match on the fourteenth day of the Wimbledon Championship drew a star-studded crowd. In addition to McConaughey, the Royal box was filled with the likes of A-list celebrities, including his wife, Camila Alves, Paul Mescal, Andrew Scott, Richard Branson, Anna Wintour, and London Mayor Sadiq Khan. Italy’s Jannik Sinner and Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz faced off during the match, with Sinner stealing the victory to become the champion.

Ahead of the match, when Middleton was making her way to her seat, McConaughey stood to applaud her while people beside him remained seated. Sharing the clip from the match, a netizen on X (formerly Twitter) penned, “Matthew McConaughey standing to applaud the Prince & Princess of Wales. What a lovely southern gentleman.” Another one chimed in to say, “Yes, he has lovely manners.” In a similar vein, one penned, “McConaughey surely respects everyone he encounters.”

A fan also pointed out how McConaughey adhered to the dress code of the tournament, arriving in a crisp off-white suit paired with a powder blue shirt and a green tie. They noted, “Don’t forget,  perfectly dress for the occasion.” Another opined, “Mathew has always been a class act.” Meanwhile, the actor's gesture led others to wonder why Middleton was welcomed with a huge round of applause, to which a royal fan replied, “She's looking lovely, as she did yesterday as well. And the applause for her is well deserved. People genuinely wish her well, after what she's been through.”

McConaughey and his wife, who also attended the thirteenth day of the tournament, were seated in the next row from the Prince and Princess of Wales. In the end, Middleton presented Sinner with the silver-gilt trophy to celebrate his victory against last year’s champion, Alcaraz. According to The Sun, she also told the Italian star, “It must be so wonderful seeing the names on the (winner’s) board and your name amongst it.” Tennis enthusiasts themselves, young George and Charlotte, meanwhile, were thrilled to meet the new champion and get his autograph.
