King Charles’ Upcoming US Visit Is Already Facing an Unexpected Setback — but Fans Aren’t Bothered

Fans defend an accidental nod to the King’s other realm ahead of his U.S. state visit.

Washington DC is used to the high-stakes choreography of state visits, yet as the city readied itself for King Charles’s historic tour, marking the 250th anniversary of American independence, the visual reception went slightly off script. Hundreds of banners were displayed across the capital on April 24, all designed to honor the British monarch’s arrival. The situation, however, took a rather shocking turn when 15 flags from Australia were tucked between the Stars and Stripes and the Union Jack,  representing a completely different section of the Commonwealth.

In what was dubbed the ‘Down Under Blunder,’  the Australian national flag, which differs from the British one due to its six white stripes, was hoisted onto black lamp posts lining the route near the White House and the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. The mix-up is quite common — likely rooted in the Australian flag’s design — which contains the Union Jack in its upper-left canton. Nevertheless, for a city acting as the focal point of international diplomacy, the error was immediate fodder for public discourse.

The internet was quick to point out the lack of due diligence. “They couldn't bother to take 15 seconds and google ‘UK flag?’” one netizen questioned on X. Another took a swipe at the American education system, joking, “I blame George Bush and no child left behind,” while a third gasped, “Glad they fixed it before the King arrives.” Regardless of the embarrassment, some social media users pointed out that the slip-up was not technically an insult to the Crown. Given that King Charles also serves as the constitutional head of state of Australia, the flags were still, in a sense, his own. One commentator argued, “They should have kept the Australian flags up,” adding, “Charles is constitutionally our head of state.” Echoing the same sentiment, another user noted, “He’s king of Australia so what’s the problem?”

While the public was debating the mishap online, the DC Department of Transportation was quick to rectify its mistake. Workers were later snapped replacing the 15 Australian flags with the correct ones, ensuring the streets were correctly draped before the King and Queen Camilla touch down. Scheduled to arrive on April 27, the King and Queen will begin their four-day journey across Washington, New York, and Virginia. Even though the flags have been taken down, the oversight serves as a brief, awkward prelude to a visit intended to clear out strains between the two nations, with Charles acting like a peacemaker.
