King Charles’ US Visit Isn’t Just Royal Duty — Experts Say It Will Be His ‘Most Important Task’
With tensions rising, King Charles’ upcoming US visit might need some serious diplomatic balancing, as experts say the stakes are pretty high right now
King Charles III and Queen Camilla are all set to make their visit to the U.S. at the end of April 2026. Donald Trump is set to host the royal couple for a pretty lavish State Dinner at the White House. The whole visit is expected to highlight the long-standing ties between the UK and the US and keep that “special relationship” front and center. But the timing could not be more tense. Globally, things are heating up, especially with Trump threatening to “obliterate” Iran.
As Charles prepares to travel, things are not exactly calm behind the scenes. Tensions have been building between Donald Trump and the UK’s Prime Minister, Keir Starmer. Starmer has been treading carefully when it comes to the situation with Iran, initially holding back on allowing US access to UK airbases for strikes. Starmer said in the Parliament (via Reuters), “We were not involved in the initial strikes against Iran, and we will not join offensive action now. But in the face of Iran's barrage of missiles and drones, we will protect our people in the region.”
However, that did not sit well with Trump, and he told the Sun that the move was a “disappointment” and even took a jab at him, saying, “This is not Winston Churchill.” Then he took things a step further on Truth Social, bluntly telling the UK to “go get your own oil” from Iran, adding to the already tense atmosphere ahead of the King’s visit.
While speaking on the Sun Royal Exclusive, royal expert Samara Gill said that this visit will be the most important one for Charles as a King. She continued, “I mean, this will be his most important task to date as the King. I mean, we’ve got the world on a knife’s edge at the moment, sort of teetering on World War Three. I’m not trying to be overdramatic here. But yes, Trump is unpredictable… the King is pretty much the only person that he actually listens to.” Gill added, “If you think about it, he listens to no one, Trump… The King is going to have to do diplomatic gymnastics here in order to pull something off.”
Trump officially confirmed Charles and Camilla’s trip and revealed the dates the King will be visiting the While House and Capitol. He wrote, “Melania and I are pleased to announce that Their Majesties, the King and Queen of the United Kingdom, will visit the United States for a Historic State Visit from April 27-30th, which will include a beautiful Banquet Dinner at the White House on the evening of April 28th.”
Earlier, while talking about the upcoming visit, Trump portrayed Charles as an ally and took a fresh dig at Starmer. He told The Telegraph, “I think he would have taken a very different stand [on the war in Iran], but he doesn't do that. I mean, he's a great gentleman."
