Kate Middleton Gets Candid About the One Thing That Made Her Cancer Battle Truly Difficult
As she met with cancer patients and caregivers at The Christie in Manchester, the Princess of Wales held nothing back.
Having walked through her own dark valley of a cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy in 2024, Kate Middleton's public engagements have transformed from standard royal duties into deeply personal missions. When she stepped into Manchester's Christie NHS Foundation Trust today, she stood there as a fellow survivor who intimately understands the unspoken terror, relief, and exhausting toll that cancer exacts on an entire family. While observing Claire Lorente prepare to end her chemotherapy, Middleton shared an emotional moment with Claire’s partner, acknowledging the struggles loved ones face.
She related this to her own experience with illness and discussed the impact on her parents, Carole and Michael Middleton. This resonates with Prince William’s reflections on 2024 being the "hardest" year of his life due to the battles faced by both his wife and father with cancer. "I know it's just as hard for families and loved ones," the Princess of Wales said while reflecting on the role of caregivers, especially when it is the immediate family. "I know how hard it was for the children and my parents. You go through it with them." She further lauded Lorente by calling her 'brave' in front of her baby, PEOPLE! reported.
Beyond clinical treatment, Middleton also spent time exploring the hospital's wellbeing garden with a facility gardener and joined patients for an art therapy session. As an avid gardener herself, this highlighted her focus on nature and holistic care as essential components of long-term healing. Coming back to her healing journey, Prince William stated in November 2025 that he and Middleton decided to be upfront with their children about her illness. He noted that, while this technique had advantages, it occasionally felt like oversharing, but he believed that withholding facts from youngsters was unhelpful.
Author Russel Myers, in his book William and Catherine: The Monarchy's New Era: The Inside Story, has previously highlighted that the Waleses prioritized privacy and family bonding during the cancer diagnosis. A close aide recounted that they calmly informed their children about the situation, explaining the necessary duration of Middleton's absence while assuring them that life would remain normal until her return, after which she would need some time to rest. Myers further revealed that during her treatment, Middleton was well aware of what was going on with her children through video conversations.
Despite experiencing a testing period, one of her close friends told the author that "her focus was always on her children [and] being as positive and optimistic as possible was all for them." By facing challenges together, Kate and William have redefined modern royalty, turning personal trauma into a lesson on love and solidarity, ultimately strengthening their bond as a family.
