The legal pressure on Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has intensified as three separate police forces confirmed they have launched a joint task force to review the millions of Epstein files released by the US Department of Justice. What started as a referral to the Metropolitan Police has now expanded into a multi-agency operation. The National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) confirmed that officers from the Met, Thames Valley Police, and Surrey Police are now working together to establish whether a full-fledged criminal investigation is warranted.

The NPCC said in an official statement, “A national coordination group has been set up to support a small number of forces assessing allegations that have emerged following the publication of the US DoJ's Epstein files.” The statement highlighted plans to work ‘collaboratively’ to assess the information and understand how the Epstein files might affect the case. It further read: “We continue to support our partners and contribute in any way we can to help secure justice for victims and survivors.” The task force is specifically looking into allegations of sex trafficking and claims that Mountbatten-Windsor leaked confidential UK government reports to the disgraced financier during her tenure as a trade envoy.

The expansion efforts follow a scathing critique of previous police efforts by former Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Writing in the New Statesman, he alleged that the initial 2015 inquiries into the former Prince failed to examine crucial logistics of Epstein’s UK operations. “I have been told privately that the investigations related to the former Prince Andrew did not properly check vital evidence of flights," Brown wrote, adding, “I have asked the police to look at this as part of the new inquiry.” He also pointed towards the late financier’s use of Stansted Airport as a hub of his trafficking network, pointing to a graphic email that detailed how Epstein was able to use the airport.

Not just that, as per the former Prime Minister, the financier reportedly “boasted how cheap the airport charges were compared to Paris” while using the facility “to fly in girls from Latvia, Lithuania and Russia.” Brown suggested that a rigorous look at these flight manifests could implicate others. “A UK police investigation…could reveal Epstein’s enablers in Britain, and might also discover whether his friends protected him from a UK investigation." While Brown was blunt in his assessment of the situation, Mountbatten-Windsor has consistently denied any wrongdoing, despite having settled a civil lawsuit of an undisclosed sum with his accuser, Virginia Giuffre, in 2022.

Previously, the Metropolitan police had defended their choice not to press charges, saying the crimes happened outside their jurisdictional area. After talking to Giuffre in 2015, Central Specialist Crime Commander Ella Marriott had noted, “This did not result in any allegation of criminal conduct against any UK-based nationals.” The current review, however, marks a significant shift in tone and scope. Thames Valley Police has already engaged specialist prosecutors to assist with the new evidence.
