William and Kate May Have Just Gained an Unexpected Edge Over Harry and Meghan — As New Figures Emerge
Kate Middleton and Prince William seemed to have triumphed where Meghan Markle and Prince William may not have done well.
It is no secret that Prince William and Kate Middleton have been at odds with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle for the past several years. Although the two couples are close relatives, they are estranged and have manned their forts in their respective territories - the UK and the US. However, now it seems that the Waleses might just prevail on the Sussexes’ land after the former’s charity accounts were released, revealing that William and Middleton’s organizations receive extensive funding from across the pond. Meanwhile, Harry and Markle’s charity reportedly ran into financial woes.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex founded their own philanthropic organization, Archewell, after leaving the royal family in 2020. Later renamed as Archewell Philanthropies, the charitable arm reportedly underwent a “reset” in December last year. The operational restructuring came at the cost of staff redundancies as expenses exceeded revenue. However, the pair remains committed to “broaden their global philanthropic efforts”.
On the other hand, the Royal Foundation of the Prince and Princess of Wales raked in around $11.7 million USD from its US office, according to the accounts filed this week with the Charity Commission. Richard Eden of the Daily Mail reported, “The monies from the 'American Friends' branch of the foundation, which is a separately controlled entity established in 2011, is almost £4 million (around $5.3 million USD) up on the £4.9 million (around $6.5 million USD) that it handed out in 2024. The generosity of their US supporters is so great that it accounts for 44 per cent of the foundation's total reported income of £19.6 million (around $26.3 million USD) in 2025.”
The Royal Foundation funds Middleton’s “Early Years program supporting young children, William's crusade to end rough sleeping through his Homewards initiative, and United for Wildlife, a new enterprise launched last year to help tackle the illegal trafficking of animals”. In 2025, the organization spent around $22.2 million USD on charitable causes while retaining around $14.2 million USD. The year before that, the charity's staff also increased from 67 to 80. Given the numbers, the Foundation seems to be in a much better shape than Archewell at this point.
But this won’t be the first roadblock the Duke has endured in his humanitarian work over the past few years. “Harry had something of an annus horribilis last year when it came to his charitable endeavors. Much to his distress, he stepped down as patron of Sentebale, the charity he co-founded in 2006 for children with HIV in Lesotho and Botswana. He concluded early in 2025 that his relationship with the organization's chairman, Sophie Chandauka, had deteriorated 'beyond repair', Eden wrote. The 41-year-old is currently being sued by Sentebale for defamation.
The comparisons between the Waleses and the Sussexes have seemingly extended beyond pre-wedding dramas, lip gloss, news articles, and scones to the work all four of them have continuously deemed important. Despite whatever conditions their respective organizations are in, all of them have continued with their charitable efforts.
