This Young Royal Just Followed William & Kate's Footsteps ― And It Could Change Her Royal Future
An under-the-radar member of the Royal Family is drawing fresh attention after reaching a major milestone.
As the Royal Family continues to adapt to a slimmed-down monarchy, Lady Louise Windsor is increasingly being viewed as a valuable figure for its future. Her maturity, down-to-earth nature, and ability to remain largely out of the spotlight have made her a relatable royal for younger generations. As the pool of working royals continues to shrink, commentators believe her calm and composed demeanor could one day make her an important source of support during Prince William's future reign. Her latest milestone also follows a path previously taken by the Prince and Princess of Wales, fueling further speculation that she could assume a more prominent role within the Royal Family in the years ahead.
She graduated from the University of St. Andrews with a degree in English on July 2. At the ceremony, she wore the traditional graduation attire. To commemorate the occasion, new photos of Lady Louise, including a portrait and one with her parents, were released on the official Instagram handle of the royal family, lauding her achievement. "Congratulations to Lady Louise on her graduation from St Andrews University!" the caption read. Lady Louise, the daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, started attending the University of St. Andrews in September 2022. This institution also famously hosted her cousin, Prince William, who met Kate Middleton there in 2001. Louise's university experience has been kept private, allowing her to enjoy a typical undergraduate life, similar to William's time at the university.
According to PEOPLE, Lady Louise intends to take a year off after graduation to pursue various professional prospects. Reportedly, she is also set to receive her Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award at a ceremony during Royal Week at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, in honor of her grandfather, the late Prince Philip, who established the Duke of Edinburgh Awards in the 1950s to assist adolescents attain their full potential. She will join Kate and her father as Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award recipients. Despite being over the age of 18, she has not acquired a royal title or the styling of Her Royal Highness, a decision shared by her younger brother, James, Earl of Wessex. Louise and James are not working members of the royal family. However, William might use her potential to lead the younger generation of royals in the future.
While she has often been described by commentators as a potential asset to William's future monarchy, her mother, Sophie, has consistently emphasized giving her children as normal an upbringing as possible. "We try to bring them up with the understanding they are very likely to have to work for a living. Hence, we made the decision not to use HRH titles. They have them and can decide to use them from 18, but I think it’s highly unlikely," she had previously told The Sunday Times in 2020. For now, the 21-year-old appears content pursuing her own path outside royal duties, but growing public interest in her future continues to fuel speculation that she could eventually take on a larger role within the institution if called upon.
