Resurfaced Video Shows the Moment Prince William Became Aware of His Famous Future
As the firstborn son of King Charles and the late Princess Diana, Prince William became heir to the throne even before he could barely take his first steps. Now, the Prince of Wales is fully aware of his responsibilities and is doing a wonderful job molding a modern monarchy. Interestingly, a resurfaced 1984 video suggests that even at age two, he seemed minutely aware of his famous future, with one telling gesture speaking volumes. In it, baby William pauses to pose for photographers before casually kicking a ball around the garden.
The clip in question is part of a larger photocall at Kensington Palace to mark William's second birthday. Filmed in June, it showed the young prince, in a white shirt and red shorts, walking around the gardens, playing ball with his parents, and interacting with the press. In this footage, a toddler William is seen posing for photographers alongside his mother, Diana, before kicking a ball around the garden with Charles, only to return moments later to acknowledge the waiting press. The telling gesture stands as one of the earliest, if not the very first, examples of the future king showing an awareness of his public-facing role at such a young age.
Additionally, the photocall included another incident, where William showed curiosity towards what would now be a regular part of his life. In one clip, he can be seen repeatedly pointing toward the cameras, animatedly talking, and curious about the attention around him. When then-Prince Charles gently explained that it was 'a camera,' the moment underscored how early the future king was introduced to the public eye. The same media attention would haunt him for many years, as it sadly became the reason his mother tragically lost her life on August 31, 1997.
While he innocently tolerated some press attention in childhood, the Prince of Wales has often spoken about the toll the constant media intrusion had on him. In his October 3 interview with Eugene Levy for The Reluctant Traveler, he said, "The media were so insatiable back then. It's hard to think of it now, but they were much more insatiable. And they wanted every bit of detail they could absorb, and they were in everything, literally everywhere." He added, "And if you let that creep in, the damage it can do to your family life is something that I vowed would never happen to my family."
Indeed, William has held up his end of the bargain, as he has consistently guarded his three children from the media and kept their lives private. In the same interview, he stressed, "I take a very strong line about where I think that line is, and those who overstep it, you know, I'll fight against. But equally, I understand, in my role, there is interest. You have to work with the media…You have to have a grown-up sort of situation with it as well."
