Princess Kate Set to Receive Rare Italian Honor During Landmark Solo Visit: Report
The gesture is said to bridge the gap between British philanthropic efforts and Italian educational heritage.
Princess Kate, on Wednesday, May 13, and Thursday, May 14, 2026, will be traveling to the city of Reggio Emilia to receive a rare Italian honor appreciating and recognizing her extensive advocacy for early years development in children. The upcoming Italy visit is set to culminate in a rare and historic gesture of diplomatic appreciation. The Duchess of Wales, during the trip later this week, will also receive a symbolic gift that traces its roots back to the very foundations of Italian identity. The gesture is said to bridge the gap between British philanthropic efforts and Italian educational heritage, marking a significant moment of cultural exchange.
As per reports from HELLO!, the Princess will be presented with the “Primo Tricolore,” which is the city’s highest honor. Kate will also be receiving the historic green, white, and red flag during her stay in the northern Italian city. The flags symbolize a design that originated in the city in 1797 as the banner of the Cispadane Republic. While the modern Italian flag is recognized globally, this original version was first created in Reggio Emilia in 1797, way before the 1861 unification of Italy.
The original version of the flag features a unique coat of arms depicting four arrows encircled by a laurel wreath, representing a pre-unification history that predates the modern Italian state by over sixty years. Talking in depth about the honor and the decision of the council to bestow it upon Kate, the city’s mayor, Marco Massari shared, “We consider this visit truly prestigious because it highlights one of the experiences that make our city a model known and appreciated worldwide."
During his address to the council, he added, “We are convinced that the visit of a woman who uses her popularity as a vehicle for spreading educational approaches in harmony with the Reggio Approach is of great importance.” While the honor is huge, it will likely be held privately behind closed doors. The main reason behind the privately held session is Kate's personalized approach towards the cause.
She herself is visiting Italy because of her role with the Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood, a charity and research initiative she supports on personal grounds and that is not backed by the British government. So, the honor is being given to her for her charity and social work focused on children’s early development, rather than for government or royal state duties. While the honor is huge, many did not see it coming, as it is not a commercialized or government-backed service.
For the next two days, Kate will be traveling solo, without Prince William, to focus on her "Shaping Us" framework, which empowers international models of early years education. She will also be supporting children's social and emotional development undertakings during the tour.
