Prince William’s Latest Move Shows He Has More in Common With Harry Than He’d Like to Admit
Prince William’s new mental health message had many recalling Prince Harry’s honest past confessions about grief and pressure.
Prince William recently spoke on mental health and urged men to speak up more about their issues. As Mental Health Awareness Week begins, he showed his support for a charity working towards the prevention of suicides among men. However, royal fans were quick to compare his stance to Prince Harry’s long advocacy for mental well-being. Over the years, Harry has been open about therapy and grief, and now, William seems to be echoing the same message.
On May 11, during a visit to Birmingham, William officially opened James’ Place, a charity center dedicated to helping men in suicidal crisis. The Prince of Wales also expressed hope that more facilities like this could eventually be rolled out across the UK as concerns surrounding men’s mental health continue to grow.
William said, “The team here is fantastic. I hope we can get more of you around the UK, because it is in need of it, sadly. We need to talk more about suicide, talk more about preventing, and talk about getting it to young men and women earlier so we don't have to have these centres in the very long run. That is the aim.” The charity was founded by the parents of James Wentworth-Stanley, who took his own life at the age of 21.
Prince Harry, on the other hand, has long been one of the royal family’s most outspoken voices on emotional well-being. During his recent trip to Australia with his wife, Meghan Markle, he delivered an emotional speech at the InterEdge Summit in Melbourne. He openly spoke about the emotional struggles he faced, especially when it came to dealing with grief in the public eye. While acknowledging that his life had been far from typical, he explained that the emotions tied to loss, pressure, and difficult early experiences were still deeply relatable.
Harry said, “In my experience, loss is disorienting at any age. Grief does not disappear because we ignore it. Experiencing that as a kid while in a goldfish bowl under constant surveillance, yes, that will have its challenges. And without purpose, it can break you.” He added, “For many years, I was numb to it, and perhaps that was easier then, but I also didn’t yet have the tools to deal with it.”
It is an open secret that the relationship between the two brothers has not been the same since Harry officially stepped down from his royal duties in 2020. There have been a few reports of possible reconciliation between Harry and King Charles; nothing has changed yet. A source revealed that the rift between the two brothers is not getting better, saying, “Charles appears to be guided by a desire to heal the rift and rebuild a relationship with Prince Harry, whereas William views any form of reconciliation as potentially destabilizing and damaging to the institution's credibility—and he is not prepared to bend on that point.”
