Prince William Overtakes King Charles in Wealth as Palace Reveals Historic Tax Details
King Charles' unprecedented tax disclosure also revealed new details about Prince William's growing fortune.
King Charles has defied all rules and become the first British monarch to disclose his personal tax bill. Prince William also followed in his father's footsteps and revealed his income tax and capital gains from the same tax year. However, the figures also showed the Prince of Wales' hefty net worth, which now surpasses even Charles'.
The news (via Mirror) came with the release of the Royal Family's latest financial records, which showed William's net worth through the Duchy of Cornwall now stands at an estimated $1.58 billion (£1.2 billion). The documents also covered the Sovereign Grant, which pays for the royals' official work, along with the private finances of the Duchy of Lancaster and the Duchy of Cornwall, which William inherited after becoming Prince of Wales.
The figures also confirmed for the first time that the future King is now wealthier than his father. The latest Duchy accounts showed William received a private income of $28.48 million (£21.6 million) during the 2025-26 financial year. Meanwhile, Charles' personal fortune was estimated at $844 million (£640 million) in the latest Sunday Times Rich List, up $39.56 million (£30 million) from the previous year.
As the Royal Family continues to open up about its finances, Charles and William have both revealed how much tax they paid privately. The figures show William paid $10.26 million (£7.76 million) in income and capital gains tax in 2024-25, after paying $11.01 million (£8.34 million) the previous year. Furthermore, Buckingham Palace revealed Charles has paid more than $34 million (£30 million) in tax since ascending the throne in 2022. William, meanwhile, has paid over $26.40 million (£20 million) since becoming Prince of Wales, according to Kensington Palace.
As per Towns & Country, a spokesperson for the Palace said, “While this is the first time a Monarch has shared this personal tax information, you may recall it was similarly released by His Majesty when he was Prince of Wales.” They continued, “The decision to do so as Sovereign has come at the express wish of the King himself, as part of the adaptations carried across since Accession.”
The update came after the news that William has decided not to personally receive the $1.98 million (£1.5 million) in annual rent generated by the abandoned Dartmoor Prison. From the 2026-27 financial year onwards, the money will instead go towards regenerating the local community rather than being included in the income he receives from the Duchy of Cornwall.
