William Has 3 Strict Rules for George, Charlotte & Louis — and They’re All About Keeping Life 'Normal'
William and Kate want their kids' childhood to be as normal as possible before royal duty eventually becomes a much bigger part of their lives.
Prince William has made it clear that being born into the Royal Family does not mean Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis will simply get everything they want. Behind the scenes, the Prince and Princess of Wales have enforced firm rules to make sure their children grow up grounded, despite their very extraordinary lives. As per a royal expert, William is greatly inspired by his mother's parenting style and wants to inculcate the same values in his kids; hence, he imposes three strict rules on them.
One of the biggest rules in the Wales household is about gifts and material possessions. William appears to be following in his mother's footsteps by making sure his children do not become spoiled by their royal status. Princess Diana was known for turning down or passing on gifts sent to William and Prince Harry, and her approach appears to have influenced how William is raising his own children. "Diana was the first person to make sure her boys had some sort of normal lifestyle, and that is continuing with the Wales children," royal author Simon Vigar told HELLO!
He continued, "George, Charlotte, and Louis have a more normal childhood than William and Harry did." The expert elaborated that, along with William, even his wife, Princess Kate, shares the same philosophy, having previously spoken about why their children don't need to be surrounded by endless toys or expensive experiences. Another important rule in the family is making sure George, Charlotte, and Louis feel comfortable expressing their feelings. William has previously explained that he and Kate want their children to understand their emotions rather than keep everything bottled up.
"Catherine and I are clear that we want [our children] to grow up feeling able to talk about their emotions and feelings," William had previously shared. The future King explained, "Sometimes, emotions have to be put to one side to get the job done, but if you have been through an especially traumatic or stressful situation, it is essential to talk it through after the event." With these two rules, William enforces one more strict rule for his kids: no cell phones!
William has admitted that he and Kate have struggled with deciding when to give their children mobile phones, particularly due to internet safety. "It's really hard," William said. "I think when George moves on to secondary school, then maybe he might have a phone that has no internet access." The Prince has made it clear that the internet is his biggest concern, saying children can access "too much stuff they don't need to see online." He even joked that he would prefer to give George an "old sort of brick phone" if it meant keeping him away from the wider internet.
