Rumours are nothing new within the royal household. But when it comes to the future King and Queen, speculation carries extra weight, and this time, claims of trouble in their marriage were amplified by doctored videos and AI-generated images circulating online. April marks 15 years since Prince William and Kate Middleton married at Westminster Abbey in a ceremony watched by millions around the world. In the years since, they have navigated public scrutiny, private pressure, and shifting royal expectations, emerging not diminished but strengthened and aligned. Parents of three children and now firmly established as the future of the monarchy, the Prince and Princess of Wales look like a couple who have found their rhythm.

Body language expert Darren Stanton, analysing the couple’s public appearances over the years, says their connection has evolved in a way that reflects longevity. Stanton told Royal Insider that in the early stages of their relationship, Middleton was far more guarded. “The early part of their relationship, from the early 2000s up until they got engaged, Middleton used to be quite self-contained; her body language was quite closed off,” he said.

William, too, was cautious in those years. Stanton noted that while the Prince of Wales has always carried a natural confidence, it was once tempered by self-protection, particularly under media glare. “William had this innate confidence, but again in the early stages of the relationship, he was very guarded, especially around the media,” he explained.

What stands out now, Stanton suggests, is how closely their movements and presence mirror each other. “They were very similar back then, and that remains true. They have grown together over the years, and that is why they still have such a strong relationship,” he said, adding that “as time has gone on, there has been a steady increase in matching and mirroring.” At public engagements today, he observed, “they almost move as one unit.”

According to Stanton, this growing comfort points to something more significant. He believes both William and Middleton have “really come out of their shells." “They are showing more PDA, they are far more free in their movements, they show constant open palm gestures and are incredibly tactile,” he said. Just as significant, Stanton noted a shift in William’s behaviour. “William has lost a lot of the self-soothing gestures he used to exhibit, fiddling with sleeves, hands in his pockets, looking around him for support. It shows how his confidence has grown,” he said.

That confidence, he added, is most apparent when William is alongside his wife. “The lack of these is particularly apparent when he is with Kate; she is his rock as he is for her.” For Stanton, these changes speak to stability rather than strain. He described the Prince and Princess of Wales as a “real power couple," not because of status or image, but because of how their relationship functions. “They have fantastic eye contact, a controlled stillness, and calm fluid gestures,” he said, adding, “Their bond is strong and clear for all to see.”
