William and Kate’s Body Language Hints at a Major Shift in Their Marriage, Says Expert

Prince William and Kate Middleton endured the most challenging period of their lives last year, following the Princess's cancer diagnosis, which came just weeks after the King's. The Princess of Wales, now in remission, has spoken about her battle with the disease at several engagements. Royal expert Katie Nicoll believes that, owing to the Waleses' recent struggles, their relationship has undergone a major shift. According to Nicoll, William and Middleton are now more open in their relationship and unafraid to show PDA — a stark contrast to their early years as a married couple.

Reflecting on their new 'closeness', royal expert Katie Nicoll told The Mirror, "I’ve been with them on many occasions, and when the cameras drop, you’ll often see them walk away and Kate will put an arm around his waist, or he’ll place his hand in the small of her back." She added, "There’s a lovely closeness between them, and whereas at the start of their marriage they seemed shy about being affectionate in public, they’re so much more confident now."
Echoing Nicoll’s claims, royal author Duncan Larcombe opined that after their challenges, the Prince and Princess are more ‘in control than ever.’ He said, "They’ve had their ups and downs, but there’s no doubt they are flying high. It’s not easy being a member of the royal family, but, as a couple, they seem to be about as together as it gets." Meanwhile, author Christopher Anderson explained that the couple’s shared sense of humor is what keeps them obsessed with each other after so many years. He stressed, "They can still make each other double over laughing."

William and Middleton’s newfound intimacy was first highlighted in a video update about the latter’s journey with cancer treatment in 2024. The clip showed the couple packing on the PDA, handholding, kissing, and hugging, straying away from royal protocol. Commenting on the video, an insider told Us Weekly, "William and Kate seem like a different couple! They [William and Middleton] used to be more reserved. But now, they can’t help but look at each other and smile." Most recently, after Donald Trump’s state banquet, they posted a rare intimate photo on Instagram, lovingly holding hands while standing outside Windsor Castle.

Another positive shift in the Waleses' marriage is that they have been spending more time together. Locals and neighbors in Anmer, Norfolk, have witnessed them sneak out for private date nights at nearby pubs. The pair actively prioritizing private family time and a fresh chapter is also a catalyst for their move from Adelaide Cottage to Forest Lodge later this year. Reflecting on the same, a source told HELLO! "Moving gives them an opportunity for a fresh start; an opportunity to leave some of the more unhappy memories behind. They are looking forward to creating many happy family memories in their new home."
