Harry’s Lighthearted Hospital Joke Reveals Just How Much His Life Has Changed Since Royal Exit — Watch
Prince Harry's latest joke said more about royal life than he probably intended.
While Prince Harry's latest U.K. visit has been filled with meaningful engagements, it also came with a lighthearted reminder of just how much his life has changed since stepping away from royal duties. The Prince, along with his wife, Meghan Markle, stepped down from royal duties back in 2020 and ever since have been living miles away in California. During a stop at Birmingham Children's Hospital on Thursday, the Duke of Sussex shared a funny admission while celebrating a major milestone for one of the charities closest to his heart.
Harry visited the hospital to mark the 20th anniversary of the very first WellChild Nurse. The role was created in 2006 to help children with complex medical needs receive coordinated care between the hospital and their homes. As a patron of WellChild since 2007, Harry has been a longtime supporter of the organization and even helped fund the very first WellChild Nurse, making the occasion especially meaningful for him. Throughout the visit, the duke spent time chatting with young patients and their families, listening to their stories, sharing laughs, and thanking the nurses whose work has transformed the lives of countless children over the past two decades.
The most memorable moment of the day, however, came when Harry was invited to cut a celebratory raspberry and white chocolate sponge cake. As per PEOPLE, pausing with the knife in hand, he joked, "I haven't cut a cake for a very long time." The playful remark drew smiles from those gathered and appeared to reference one of the classic traditions of royal engagements. Alongside unveiling plaques and planting trees, cutting ceremonial cakes has long been a familiar part of life for working members of the royal family. Watch the video here!
Since Harry and Markle stepped back from their roles as senior working royals in 2020 and moved to California, those kinds of engagements have naturally become much less frequent. However, Harry still stands for causes close to his heart, and talking to WellChild executives, nurses and families, he added, “I don’t know if you hear it enough, the difference that you make every single day is quite literally changing daily lives.”
The Prince continued, “I understand, and we understand, that becomes harder every week with cuts and financial difficulties... just the insanity that seems to be circulating, not just in this country, but in general, but hospitals like this don’t run without people like you, and families like this can’t be the families that they want to be at home without the expertise and the skill set that you’re handing over to them, and WellChild is right at the centre of that.”
Speaking from personal experience as a father of two, Harry expressed hope that continued support for the NHS and WellChild would make life easier for families caring for children with complex medical needs. “The hope through WellChild and the continued support that this country and, hopefully, the government continues to give the NHS and the partnership with WellChild provide more opportunities for you to make your lives easier," he added.
"We can't solve everything," Harry admitted. "But what we can do is make sure that your lives are more comfortable and that you are trained to be able to take your kids home and not be stuck in the hospital," promised the Prince.
